Raised in San Diego, CA to two hard working African American parents

Ashley Hawkins a.k.a A$HCA$H grew up understanding that education, dedication, and hard work, is what it will take to become what you want to be. Growing up under the influence of Maya Angelou, Zora Neal Hurston and her parents, Ashley knew that she wanted to change the world through her voice and words.

A 24 year old college student studying for Media Communications and a minor in African American Studies.  She began writing poetry in elementary school that started off as a school assignment in which won her first place, and that’s where her love for poetry developed. Throughout her middle school years she wrote what people called “poetry beyond her years”. She once had her poetry book taken by her high school teacher because her work was so “explicit” that they became concerned. She began getting known in high school for the “go to girl” to write a love poem for someone.

A$HCA$H didn’t start performing poetry until October of 2011 and didn’t officially want to make it her career until December of 2012, since then she has became the host of Rhapsody open mic, and a host on World Tuned Radio for their poetry segment.

Ultimately her goal is to inspire other writers, and to feature at other venues across the globe. And to change the mindset of people who have never read or heard poetry.
