The field of Alternative Dispute Resolution is rapidly growing and evolving. Many court systems throughout the US accept the outcome of arbitration, and even mediation, as legitimate. One example of this is the Los Angeles County Superior Court system, which mandates civil cases to go through mediation before they can be hear by a judge. On this interview we will hear from Honorable Dorothy Nelson, Sr Judge for the US Court of Appeals - 9th Circuit. Judge Nelson is a great advocate of Alternative Dispute Resolution, both locally, nationally, and internationally. She is also a very passionate advocate of building peaceful communities. Her passion for peaceful ways to resolve conflict, associated with her constant desire to improve the community led her to establish the Western Justice Center, an nonprofit organization in Pasadena, CA, which "envisions a society in which conflicts are transformed into opportunities for learning and growth." Judge Dorothy Nelson has received numerous awards varying from judge of the year (2009), presidential appointments (Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan), to humanitarian prizes.
