Please join our show hosts and special guest P. David Pearson (a faculty member in the programs in Language and Literacy and Human Development at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley).

Our conversation will center around common core state standards (strengths and areas needing to be improved) and deep literacy:

  • What role does culture play in CCSS? e.g., Jerome Bruner: "Culture is to the Mind as Mind is to Culture"
  • What role does motivation and engagement play in subject-matter and CCSS?
  • Do close reading advocates understand what cognitive science has taught us, i.e., about the role prior knowledge plays in comprehension?
  • How well are U.S. students faring with inferential and evaluative comprehension skills?
  • How do we get politics out of the classroom?
  • Are good teachers born with high pedagogical skills or are they developed?
