Many of us are familiar with Marissa Alexander’s story.  She is the lady in Florida facing 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot into the ceiling to deter her abusive husband (http://tinyurl.com/6uhyetd).

  • Did she act in self-defense according to the law’s definition?
  • Does the punishment fit the crime?
  • Has a crime actually been committed?
  • Did Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” defense actually apply in this case?  Was the judge wrong in not applying it in this case?
  • Does the “Battered Person Syndrome” apply in this case?  Was it even considered?

Kathryn Krastin has worked on the National Domestic Violence Survivor Law Project.  She’s an Advisory Board Member of Survive2Thrive.  She is also the founder of Domestic Violence Voices, a platform where survivors can tell their own stories.  She will join MsQuietStorm on this episode of Real Talk About Domestic Violence to share her knowledge and expertise pertaining to “The Law and Domestic Violence”.
