He grew up as a free-range college brat in North Carolina. He received an undergraduate degree from Pfeiffer College and Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University in New York City. After moving up the faculty ranks at Yale University, he moved to the University of Rochester where he now resides and terrorizes students in the introductory physics course sequences.
