Professional genealogist Angela Walton-Raji, author of Black Indian Genealogy Research: African-American Ancestors Among the Five Civilized Tribes, joins Jane this week to talk about the African American slaves of the Cherokees, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks and Seminoles -- the Five Civilized Tribes. More than 20,000 enslaved people walked the Trail of Tears with the Southeastern Indians to Oklahoma and then were freed after the Civil War. Find out the history and how to research our Black Indian ancestors using the Freedmen's records (not to be confused with the Freedmen's Bureau records). Angela will also talk about the Dawes Rolls and other federal records with African Indian people.

A founding member of AfriGeneas.com, Angela. Walton-Raji specializes in information for beginning genealogists, via daily and weekly online genealogy chats on AfriGeneas. As host of a weekly genealogy podcast, a number of instructional videos and as an expert consultant on video documentaries, Angela is a published author, host of 3 blogs, in addition to a 10-year ongoing message board, 3 websites, and The African Roots Podcast.
