January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical cancer affected more than 11,000 women worldwide in 2009. Unfortunately, thousands more will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and die from this disease in 2010. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer, and women can be screened for it with the Pap and HPV tests. Despite this fact, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is now recommending women begin cervical cancer screening at age 21, instead of 3 years after the onset of sexual activity, as was previously recommended by the group. The Imperative strongly opposes these new recommendations. Listen on Wednesday, January 20 at 3 p.m. EST as host Eleanor Hinton Hoytt discusses these controversial new recommendations and explores the topic of cervical cancer and Black women with leading experts. You can submit your questions or share your stories with Eleanor by submitting them to asktheexpert@blackwomenshealth.org.
