Keeping Kids In School: The Magic and Math of Mentoring

High School graduation rates can run as low as 27%. Why are so many kids drop out of high school and what's the connection between literacy, illiteracy, and juvenile delinquency? When one considers that every dropout costs society approx $260,000 (according to Princeton Economist Cecilia E. Rouse) the stakes are pretty high. However, young people involved in Youth Mentoring Connection, a non-profit founded by guest Tony LoRe, graduate rates are consistently over 92%. So, what accounts for his unusually high grad rates? In 1997, the Board of Communities in Schools in Los Angeles issued a challenge to “come and do your life’s work.” Tony heard the call and sold his business to dedicate his life to helping kids. He now spends all of his time and energy dedicated to connecting youth with mentors in their community. In addition to community based programs, Tony operates worksite mentoring programs that bring young people into organizations such as HBO, Warner Bros. Studios, Rhino Records, Shout! Factory, and Paramount Studios

Tony LoRe is president and founder of Youth Mentoring Connection, a non-profit youth services organization he founded in 2000 that brings caring adults into the lives of at risk youth in the Los Angeles area. LoRe is also a featured speaker and leader at each of the California Mentor Summits. In addition, Tony is the author of the nationally recognized “2 Minute Mentor Tips,” an e-mail campaign serving over 2000 mentors with on-going mentoring assistance/training. BTW, January is National Mentoring Month.
