Hyssop is a gift from the ancient past to those of us living in the present. Versatile and useful, hyssop, which translates from the Hebrew "holy herb," is deeply rooted in Biblical history and for centuries has been used to cleanse, purify, and protect individuals inside and out.
The Bible refers to hyssop at least three times. In the book of Exodus, a hyssop branch was used to apply blood to doorposts at Passover. In the Psalms, it was used as a purging agent. And a hyssop branch soaked in vinegar was offered to Jesus on the cross in the book of Matthew. Hyssop is used traditionally for respiratory infections. It is also sold in formulas for hyssop cleansing of the colon
