Kevin Lee is an award-winning journalist and writer in Mobile, Alabama who works for Lagniappe (pronounced "Lan-yap"), an alternative newspaper in the Port City. Though authoring investigative pieces on subjects like ethical lapses in the state attorney general's office and questionable land deals by local institutions, Mr. Lee's most popular work has been a series on notorious historical cases of corruption and murder. The latest in that series isn't in the past but unfolding in the present.

Stephen Nodine is a Mobile political figure with a sketchy background who appeared in the 1990s and quickly rose to power. His scandalous behavior was an open secret and when drugs were discovered in his county-issued vehicle in December of 2009, tongues began to wag around town. On May 9, 2010, Nodine's mistress of the last six years, Angel Downs, was discovered dead in her driveway with a single gunshot wound to the head. Nodine's vehicle was spotted at the scene by witnesses and his behavior later that evening was curious at best. Investigations have uncovered a stream of allegations involving physical abuse, drug abuse and abuse of power. He is currently facing federal charges in addition to those for drug possession and murder. But the case is far from open-and-shut and the jurisdiction has a reputation for letting culprits slip through the cracks...
