Jim and Jennifer are excited to welcome Jennifer Myers to the show today. Jennifer Myers is a writer, artist, and prison consultant who prepares first time, non-violent offenders for their experience of federal prison. In 2003 Jennifer was arrested by the federal government for marijuana trafficking, and in 2005 sentenced to three years in federal prison. After serving fourteen months at Federal Prison Camp Alderson in West Virginia, Jennifer was released back to San Diego, California where she began to rebuild her life, and pursue the dreams she’d manifested during her incarceration. In prison, Jennifer’s love of art and writing became a vehicle for the pain and isolation she experienced. She was shocked at the large number of female offenders she saw locked up for nonviolent crime, mostly mothers. Resolving to give back from her experience, in 2009 she founded LA Myers Consulting, a prison consulting business and began writing her first book, Trafficking The Good Life—a memoir, now completed, that documents her experience from marijuana trafficking to spiritual seeking, to arrest and incarceration. Jennifer’s poetry received in honorable mention in the 2008 PEN Prison Writing contest, and her writing and art has been published as well in the SUNY Press anthology Razor Wire Women, and the online literary magazine, qarrtsiluni.
