Most teens recognize the importance of safeguarding their privacy on Facebook and other social networks. And while their parents generally trust them, more than half regularly monitor their childrens’ use of social networks.

The finding comes as part of a study of parent and teen attitudes about privacy and social networks conducted by online privacy authority, TRUSTe, in concert with the Lightspeed Consumer Panel division of TNS. The findings, based on a survey of 2000 parents and teens, have been packaged as a guide for parents and a compilation of best practices for safeguarding teens and available on TRUSTe’s site come Monday, October 18th.

Best practices also include:

More than 75 percent of parents have talked with their teens about the steps they should take to protect their privacy, including accepting friend requests from people they don’t know, revealing too much personal information or sharing inappropriate pictures.

72 percent of parents surveyed monitor their teens’ accounts, with 50 percent of these monitoring weekly, 35 percent daily and 10 percent monthly.

The study found that parental monitoring tends to decrease with the age of the teen and that parents tend to monitor female teens more than for male teens.

TRUSTe (www.truste.com) has compiled data and can provide context for this important story. We are pre-briefing a handful of journalists who are interested in the topic of social networking, privacy & teens, and who will respect the embargo date/time of Monday, October 18th at 6 AM PT.
