Sjögren's Syndrome is a little known autoimmune disease. Those with it suffer nearly five years and many specialists visits before a diagnosis is made. Sjögren’s symptoms frequently overlap with or “mimic” those of other diseases including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. Sjögren's is characterized by dryness from all the fluid producing cells in the body. Dryness can also occur for other reasons, such as a side effect of medications such as anti-depressants and high blood pressure medication contributing to confusion for diagnosis.
Our guests exhibit many aspects of Sjögren's. Joann is a dental hygienist suffering with its effects for over a decade. Sarah Schafer is a physician who worked in Public Health and pediatrics for 18 years prior to developing severe systemic symptoms of Sjogren’s.
Dona Frosio was diagnosed with lupus in 1981 after decades of unexplained symptoms. In 1991, the diagnosis changed to primary Sjögren’s syndrome.
