Reverend Steven L. Martin is an Associate Minister under the Reverend Dr. William H.
Curtis at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he mentored, preached, and
co-taught youth/teen Bible study and men’s Sunday school. In addition, he co-taught at Duquesne
University’s Leadership and Ethics Program.
Reverend Martin is a native of Aiken, South Carolina, and the second of ten children of
Marion Martin Jr. and Jeanette Oakman.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Duquesne University in
Pittsburgh, where he concentrated in Human Resource Management with a minor in Sociology and
completed the four-year program in only three years. He received a Master Degree in Public Policy
and Management at Carnegie Mellon University, where he graduated in May 2004. He is currently
completing a Post Graduate Studies at Howard University School of Divinity.
Since he was ten years old, Reverend Martin felt his calling to the ministry. Particularly
instrumental were his spiritual and God-fearing elders. His great-grandmother taught him to
always give back because of the gift God gives His children. When he was very young, she
discerned his spiritual gifts. She knew that God had called him, and told him to be mindful of his
purpose. “If you have a gift, don’t criticize it or abuse it, but use it,” she advised.
Helping others has been a thread throughout Reverend Martin’s life. Although he
officially joined the ministry in 2002, his life has always been about empowering people.
Reverend Martin served four years in the United States Army.
