Empowerment Birthing

Amy Deagle shares her expertse on" Empowerment Birthing."  When I decided to become a Registered Nurse, there was no doubt in my mind where I would end up specializing. I worked Labor and Delivery for 5 years in a variety of different settings and places.  I saw the fierceness and determination of those women who were determined to birth naturally. And, most importantly, I saw how life changing and empowering birth could be for those women. I love that moment after birth, when the new mom, looking down at her baby whispers “I did it”.

I began my training as a Certified Nurse Midwife in April 2009 through a Masters of Nursing Program in the USA. Upon completion in May 2011, I returned to Alberta to begin my journey as a nurse-midwife. Unfortunately, there are a limited number of midwives in AB and rural women do not have access to midwifery care. This infuriated me to no end, having grown up in a rural community, and hearing the horrible birth stories of my close family & friends. I decided to create an education service that will allow women, wherever they live, to access the resources and support a nurse-midwife provides, even if I cannot be there in person.  Pregnancy through to parenthood can be an incredibly fearful, anxiety laddled experience if you aren't properly supported, or it can be a time for incredible growth, improved self-esteem and empowerment.  I am blessed to be able to work with women during this amazing time in their lives and I truly believe that providing respectful, compassionate and holistic care can empower women to reach their highest potential, and in turn strengthen not only individuals, but families, communities and humanity.
