The Black Women and the Important Role They Play in the Development of The Black Family

Last week’s show addressed the Black Man’s role in the Black Family. This week’s show will deal with the flip-side, the Black Women’s role in the development of the Black Family. I have invited three women to co-host and moderate this week’s show. The following is a synopsis of how they view the current state of the Black women and her role in the Black Family: A women’s role is very crucial in the African American household, however it is changing in order to keep up with society and our personal lifestyles. In 2010, we are providers, caregivers, mothers, wives, entrepreneurs, and much more. Our natural instinct is to nurture. However, due to the increase of demands posted upon us we are using our nurturing capabilities less and less. We are not nurturing our families and we seem to be giving the outside man quote on quote “Corporate World” more respect than our own families. In the past 50 years the percentage of African American woman between the ages of 25-54 who have never been married doubled from 20% to 40% - (Compared to 16% of white woman who have never been married. This statistic shows how we are raising families by ourselves more so with the black man in our homes. Even if families are raised out of wedlock there seems to be a missing link, which is lack of commitment. African American woman are not holding our men to the fire and I think we are SPOILING them with a pacifier rather than nurturing them with love and boundaries. We must say if you’re not going to commit then you have to leave. I think a big part of this is self love within the black woman and a lack of spirituality in her life. These women will bring their personal experiences to the discussion and hope to provide inspiration to all Black women to reclaim their glorious heritage.
