NHL hockey returns once again. With the players back on the ice putting the puck in the net so does the world of substance abuse in pro hockey.

Hockey, our beloved sport, has a drug problem. In a sport where pain is just another part of the game, it’s relatively easy to find relief. Self-medication may be as much a part of the good old hockey game as stitches and missing teeth. 

Several scientific papers published in the past two decades have established links between chronic pain and depression – and between depression, head injuries and acute stress. Few athletes are more exposed to the main risk factors than hockey players.
