“Beauty” comes from the Latin “bellus.” Beauty in Italian is bella. This is why Truth is Beauty; it has the ring of Truth! Today we will look at “A Terrible Beauty,” from Yeats poem “Easter 1916,” and how it relates to the “terrible beauty” of Nature and Art, and yes, Ascension as well. Perhaps A Terrible Beauty is Beauty’s Shadow, the Dark Side of Ourselves, that side of us we’d prefer not to acknowledge. How do you feel when you look at a painting of Christ on the Cross? Is it not a picture of terrible beauty? Is it not the stage he had to undergo before the ascension, the resurrection? Do you see the beauty?
