Leland Faust's aquatic career began in Southern California  where he established league and school records in the 100 yard butterfly
and the 400 yard freestyle. He was a 2-year finalist in the CIF
Southern Section Swimming Championships. In water polo, he was
twice all league and all CIF Southern Section in his senior year.
 
He pursued his college career at the University of California, Berkeley where he was a 3-year varsity letterman on the CAL water polo teams which were ranked 5th, 4th, and 2nd in the nation and featured two future Olympic medalists. Faust also was a 3-year varsity letterman in swimming were he set the CAL record in the 200-yard butterfly. In 1968, he was team captain and placed in the PAC 8 in the 200-yard butterfly and the 1650-yard freestyle.
 
 When he graduated with six varsity letters, he was one of only two
aquatic athletes at CAL to earn that honor. For his combination of athletic and academic achievement, he was awarded one of the few NCAA postgraduate scholarships.
