Who are you listening to?

As writers/authors, we create stories. Open to authors to share their experiences between the two concepts: they write make-believe stories from their own experiences or insight into fiction or they allow the characters to speak through them to write their manuscripts/books. Do they hear them audibly or only mentally? Who is stronger in their mindset: the villain (antagonist) vs. hero (protagonist).
