Carla DeFraine is both a licensed, practicing psychologist and a musician. She received her undergraduate and Master's degrees from Harvard University, and her Ph.D. in psychology from Vanderbilt University.

After having children of her own, Carla became aware of how little new music there was for children to sing. After being asked by her children's school to help out by teaching music to over four hundred children, ranging in age from not-yet-walking to eighth graders, when the regular teacher left unexpectedly, Carla became convinced that something had to be done. Between Baby Einstein and Hannah Montana lay a great empty space, with the sad result that children were singing less and less after they reached elementary school. Music was becoming a spectator sport for kids; something only professionals did. They were adopting a passive stance toward music, just as they adopted a passive stance toward the television set. Fewer and fewer children were singing out loud.
