Michael Jackson was fully acquitted of all allegations, but the press effectively nullified the decision of the jury. He could never escape their taunts, jeers, accusations and judgment—all reported with a smile under the guise of “freedom of the press.” Michael Jackson had talent and humanity to spare, but never did the press let up about the allegations that were proven to be false. Not once did they speak of his artistic accomplishments and aspirations without mentioning his legal woes.It was and remains an indictment of the legal process of the United States that people who reach the pinnacle of success can be extorted, proven not guilty, but nonetheless have their character assassinated by the press through words dripping with sincerity, but laced with cruel and heartless intentions. We believe society is ready for legislation whereby if a person is exonerated, they should not be forced to relive allegations by the constant reference to them in the press. Such “freedom of the press” has the practical effect of accusing the acquitted all over again—constantly, relentlessly, painfully and undeservedly.Cruel and inhumane treatment by the press—while they smile through their cruelty—is antithetical to the rights accorded United States citizens under due process. This group exists to take action to counter the repugnant pack-of-jackals mentality of the press. They virtually destroyed someone we hold dear.
