The brain is the master regulator in the body. At all times, it's receiving information and feedback, making decisions and then outputting any necessary actions that it needs to sustain itself.
In performance, it is imperative that our brains work at optimal levels to attend to the many duties the entire system requires with one of those being shutting down before catastrophic failure. FATIGUE is the body's way of communicating this to the conscious mind, much like the experience of pain.
Today, our pre-recorded show features Dr. Timothy Noakes, who will discuss how fatigue is an output of the brain not of the periphery. We will also discuss the Central Governor Model where the brain regulates exercise to preserve homeostasis.
Prof. Timothy Noakes holds both Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Science degrees from the University of Cape Town, is rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and is Professor in the Discovery Health Chair of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Cape Town. He is also author of Lore of Running, co-author of Running Injuries, Lore of Cycling, Rugby Without Risk and The Art and Science of Cricket, and has more than 450 scientific publications to his name.
