She has raised bears, comforted bears, taught bears, learned from bears, had bears communicate their needs to her, and nursed bears back to health. This remarkable book reveals the many insights about bears and their lives that she has gained through her work with them. In the eighties, Poulsen became a zookeeper in Calgary, where she rehabilitated bears in crisis. She has shared in the joy of a polar bear discovering soil under her paws for the first time in twenty years, felt the pride of a cub learning to crack nuts with her molars, and grieved at the horror of captivity for Asian black bears in China. Smiling Bears provides an enlightening and moving portrait of bears in all their richness and complexity and of Poulsen’s exhilarating work with them.   Else Poulsen holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. She has worked at the Calgary and Detroit zoos and is known internationally for her captive bear husbandry and rehabilitation. In 2000 she won the Zookeeper Research Excellence Award from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Bear Taxon Advisory Group. She works as an animal management consultant for zoos, sanctuaries, wildlife rehabilitators, and other animal welfare groups and lives in southern Ontario.   00:35:00Zoo Talkin Radionomarine parks, aquariums, zoos, conservation, bearsFew people know bears as intimately as Else Poulsen. This course examines how human activity impacts the animal world, how animals impact us, and how both are affected by the health of the environment. We may find it convenient to think of humans as living in one sphere while plants and animals occupy another, but it’s not that simple. Humans are a part of every ecosystem. All creatures share the same basic needs for air, water, shelter, food, space, and companionship—and we compete for these resources. In order to maintain the balance necessary for healthy ecosystems, it’s essential that we understand how one species impacts another. Using a series of examples, we will explore these connections, beginning with simpler animals and ecosystems, and moving on to more complex ones. Topics covered include coral bleaching, the extinction of frogs, the effects of DDT on eagles, the reasons whales strand, the future of polar bears—and more. We will also study the potential solutions to these problems. 00:34:00Zoo Talkin Radionozoo, vet, field conservation, behavior, primatesHere is a link to Dr. Spelman's book: http://www.amazon.com/Rhino-Glue-Shoes-Surprising-Patients/dp/0385341466/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0 Her website is: httpLuke Hunter, PhDhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/zoo-peeps-creator/2010/08/31/luke-hunter-phdEnvironmenthttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/zoo-peeps-creator/2010/08/31/luke-hunter-phd/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/zoo-peeps-creator/2010/08/31/luke-hunter-phdTue, 31 Aug 2010 02:00:00 GMTLuke Hunter, PhDPanthera00:35:00Zoo Talkin RadionoPanthera,Big Cats,Luke Hunter,Wildlife,ConservationPantheraDoug Hotle http://www.blogtalkradio.com/zoo-peeps-creator/2010/08/24/doug-hotleEnvironmenthttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/zoo-peeps-creator/2010/08/24/doug-hotle/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/zoo-peeps-creator/2010/08/24/doug-hotleTue, 24 Aug 2010 02:00:00 GMTDoug Hotle Curator Alb. My sincere apologies. I've been trying to change the time for over an hour, but it is restricting modification. I apologize to Serena and my audience. It just won't allow me to initiate a time change. So I started a new BTR just now. ....... When we think of animal ambassadors, we typically think of animals in living collections at living institutions (e.g., zoos, aquariums, marine parks, and other captive wildlife facilities) where their lives are care-free. Although some may raise an eye brow at the notion of training animals as large as coastal brown bears, Serena Bos, a friend of mine, takes it in stride. As a caregiver for working or performing animal ambassadors, Serena helps make documentaries about wildlife a possibility. Although she does train animals for feature films, her work also entails the development of engaging educational programs that make for once in a life time opportunity for visitors to her facility in Alberta. I certainly don't recommend that other people do this on a whim, and I typically encourage protected contact training with apex predators, when possible. I admit that I got into this field because of opportunities to work with animals in free-contact situations. With that said, I have learned that there are skilled people who dedicate their lives to training animals for media programs that enrich our lives, and it's certainly a risky job. It requires great dedication and patience and there is still much learning to be exchanged among free-contact and protected contact training programs. We welcome Serena tonight at 9PM EST. She will be calling in from Alberta, Canada where she works with Discovery Wildlife Park. http://www.discoverywildlifepark.com/01:00:00Zoo Talkin Radionobears, trainers, wildlife, zoo, documentariesThis show has to be rescheduled for 11 PM EST.
