The Culturally Responsive Leader: At Work

During this live broadcast, Dr. Sonya Whitaker will interview Dr. Karla Guseman. Dr. Guseman is the Superintendent of Schools for Joliet Township High School District. Under Dr. Guseman’s direct leadership, JTHS has made significant educational gains. The district has implemented blended learning for students and culturally responsive teaching and restorative practices cohorts for staff.  

Over 90% of all staff within the district participated in Implicit Bias training during the 2019-2020 school prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Dr. Guseman believes that diversity is a strength, and that students and staff learn empathy when they are afforded the opportunity to learn from individuals with different backgrounds and cultures. During this broadcast she will  engage in spirited conversation with Dr. Sonya Whitaker about the work being done in her district to create more culturally responsive learning environments for ALL students, even during apandemic crisis.
