We will be working with Montana PTA to give Montana kids the opportunity to have fathers and father-figures actively engaged in their education. Currently, 6 Montana schools are running Watch D.O.G.S. programs and 2 are launching. We hope to double this number (plus many more) as a result of this trip. Watch D.O.G.S. is a great partner with PTA because Watch D.O.G.S. brings an unprescedented amount of parent engagement to a school, plus it increases PTA membership when utilized properly. Watch D.O.G.S. is the school-based father engagement initiative of the National Center for Fathering with nearly 400,000 men participating in nearly 5000 schools in 46 states.  For more information on this great program, go to www.fathers.com/watchdogs and www.facebook.com/groups/ncf.watchdogs. 00:30:00Dads of Great Studentsnomontana,#Montana,PTA,PTA Membership,PTA Parents TeachersWatchDOGS Radio at the #Montana PTA Convention in Billings#158 Saturday Morning LIVE - Open Line - Tell Us About YOUR Watch D.O.G.S. Out of her amazingly deep, bottomless pockets, she pulls anti-stress gadgets. Using these gadgets, Casey learns to cope with six common, stressful childhood situations, including handling a major disappointment, getting teased, and learning a new skill. In the final chapter, Casey uses two of these gadgets, his Who-Can-I-Tell? Megaphone and his Save-the-Day Idea Bank, to help his friend the way Auntie Nellie helped him. As a bonus, Parent/Teacher Notes are included in each chapter. They provide the adult reader with the principles behind the gadgets, as well as additional tips for helping the child practice the new coping skills. Monica H. Schaeffer, Ph.D., is a health psychologist who has conducted research and led workshops on stress and decision-making and stress management. She has been published in a number of professional journals on the effects of environmental stress, commuter stress, and illness severity. After studying stress in adults, both acute and chronic, Dr. Schaeffer recognized that children could benefit from possessing a repertoire of coping techniques to prevent the harmful effects of stress. In fact, the stories and techniques included in this book began taking shape when her oldest daughter communicated that she was not satisfied with simply having bedtime stories read to her and would exclaim, "tell me a story from your mind." Currently Dr. Schaeffer is the president of the non-profit organization, VITAL, Inc. (www.vitalinc.org) and facilitates workshops on ethical wills/legacy letters. Her hobbies include photography, travel, and museum hopping.   00:30:00Dads of Great StudentsnoFather,Childhood Stress,Child Psychology, children, childrens booksStress in Children#141 Summertime Efforts to Engage Dads at Back to Schoolhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/watchdogs/2015/05/29/141-summertime-efforts-to-engage-dads-at-back-to-schoolDads and Familyhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/watchdogs/2015/05/29/141-summertime-efforts-to-engage-dads-at-back-to-school/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/watchdogs/2015/05/29/141-summertime-efforts-to-engage-dads-at-back-to-schoolFri, 29 May 2015 15:00:00 GMT#141 Summertime Efforts to Engage Dads at Back to SchoolWatch D.O.G.S. is the school based father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering. The tale has an even wider application to other news stories that portray bad things happening to good people. Newtown's Trees is a book that warms the heart and leaves the reader feeling that despite these often senseless tragedies, there's a lot of good in this world. Frank L. Miller is a writer and trained school psychologist. He earned an educational specialist degree in school psychology, and practiced for thirty-eight years before retiring in 2012. Frank adopted his son and daughter after marrying their mother, an elementary guidance counselor, and then adopted his daughter’s first-born child when she was unable to raise the child. Right now, you have the opportunity to influence your customers, your co-workers, your community, and your children. It takes a village to raise a child. Devon Bandison believes that…with a twist. He believes every individual leader – that’s you – can influence life in a positive way.  Researchers have proved that father/child contact is associated with better socio-emotional and academic functioning. Results indicate that children with more involved fathers experience fewer behavioral problems and score higher on reading achievement. Devon knows that Fatherhood is leadership and Leadership Is Influence. Devon coaches fathers around the world on how to become high performing leaders and agents of change in the lives of their children. His signature talk “Fatherhood is Leadership” has gained national recognition and was a featured TED Talk at TEDx Boca Raton in March 2015. He brings a message of hope to fathers who have struggled with work-life integration. Adversity has served as Devon’s greatest teacher molding him into the modern leader and loving father he is today. With the pain of his parent’s divorce in early childhood and absent father addicted to drugs, staying on course for success proved to be challenging. However, as a young father a shift in perspective and a decision to choose growth over victimization transformed his life. Devon began the road to recovering his true self.  His leadership seminars and coaching programs inspire many leaders across the globe. It is the gifts of adversity that fuel Devon’s compassion and dedication to helping others find their voice, inspire hope and live their own legacy of leadership. 00:31:00Dads of Great Studentsnodad, dads and family,Father, fatherhood, schoolYou are living a legacy of leadership. In her pediatric practice in the late 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Kathy spent extra time getting to know each family. From many professional experiences, she knew how lonely parents can feel in today’s culture. She saw parents, especially parents of teens, struggling in isolation with family-centered problems such as pregnancy, depression, risky drinking and drug use. In 1996, she founded the non-profit organization Full Esteem Ahead and then Family Empowerment Network to “support parents to support kids and one another.” Through FEN and with colleague Ruthie Matinko-Wald, she offers parenting talks and classes as well as support materials in the way of parenting books and videos that can be used as curriculum for self-led discussion groups. Since their publication, Raising Our Daughters, Raising Our Sons, and Face to Face: Cultivating Kids’ Social Lives in the Digital World Parenting Guides have provided parents, school professionals and other caring adults with powerful vehicles for learning, self-discovery, networking and connecting with kids and other adults. Today, Kathy continues to spread the word about the power of parent networking through presentations, seminars and classes. Azim Khamisa – an author, activist and an international inspirational speaker – was born in Kenya, Africa and had early training in mathematics, economics and finance in the U.K. A successful investment banker with over 40 years of experience, he has conducted business in Africa, Middle East, Canada, USA, Europe and Asia. Presently he serves as the President of the Child Safety Network (CSN). Committing his life to halting the continuing cycle of violence among the youth, Azim became a social activist after his 20-year-old son Tariq was senselessly  murdered while delivering pizzas in January 1995 by Tony Hicks, a 14-year-old gang member. Out of grief and despair,  Khamisa was inspired to transform his loss through the power of forgiveness. Believing that there were “victims at both ends of the gun,” Azim forgave Tony and founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to break the cycle of youth violence by saving lives, empowering positive choices and teaching the principles of nonviolence and peacemaking. A month after establishing the foundation, Azim invited Ples Felix, Tony’s grandfather and guardian, to join him. Together, since November 1995, the two have brought their story and message through  TKF’s Violence Impact Assemblies. The duo has reached over a million elementary and middle school children live and over 8 million via video programs, guiding the youth to choose a peacemaker’s life of non-violence and forgiveness. (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with over 4000 schools participating. Drive, determination, resiliency, intensity, and humility. Any of these characteristics can be used to describe linebacker Rennie Curran. ?Considered an undersized player by numerous critics going into college, he quickly silenced any doubters by striking fear into the hearts of opposing offenses during his three dominant years as an All-American football player at the University of Georgia. ??Drafted in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Titans, Curran is a force to be reckoned with in the National Football League. However, to truly understand Rennie Curran as a man, one must look deeper than his playing career. Curran has “The Liberian Dream” tattooed on his left bicep, and rightfully so. He has great pride in his Liberian heritage. This pride was brought on by the hard work and determination he witnessed from his family during their numerous struggles with adversity. Curran’s parents came to America from Liberia during the mid-1980s and remained permanently after civil war broke out in their homeland. During that time, his mother earned a master’s degree in nursing from Emory University, while his father started a shoe repair business. Curran grew up witnessing the sacrifices his family made as they supported and sheltered their Liberian family members and friends during the war. ?Curran’s experiences in life have paved the way for him to become the man that he is today. He still lives his life through the lessons he learned from his family. His on the field intensity and drive to help others is a testament to that. He currently spends much of his time with his daughter, Eleana, giving her the same love he received as a child. Rennie Curran truly is “The Liberian Dream”. 00:31:00Dads of Great Studentsnofatherhood,PTA,School Counselor,School,EducationThe Watch D.O.G.S. He is currently completing his eighth year as an educator and has been at Patapsco since beginning his teaching career. “A strong teacher-student relationship facilitates the opportunity for deeper learning and more critical thinking,” says McComb. He firmly believes that public education is the foundation for opportunity and success for any child. In addition to his role as an English instructor, McComb helped develop, and continues to spearhead, Patapsco’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program which boasted a 98% college acceptance rate for its last two graduating classes. McComb’s devotion to the teaching profession extends beyond the classroom as well. He also coaches the Patapsco Cross Country Team, supervises cultural exchange programs, and has led several university training sessions and presentations for future teachers. McComb says that he has found his purpose in teaching stating, “I have worked to engage my students and push them to achieve the excellence within them. Every child deserves nothing less, and my calling is to champion that effort.” He holds a B.A. in English Literature and a Masters of Education in English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a Certificate in School Improvement Leadership from Goucher College. Our guest this week is Jacqueline Rhodes of the Center for Urban Families (CFUF). Since its founding in 1999, CFUF has remained at the front-line of addressing some of our city’s most pressing issues, including poverty, unemployment, father-absence and family disintegration. CFUF maintains an unwavering focus on addressing the key challenges of Baltimore’s urban families by working to connect fathers to their children, creating opportunities for economic and financial security through work, and providing access to other key interventions and supportive services. Formally established in 2011, the Practitioners Leadership Institute (PLI) is a nationally focused initiative designed to provide Responsible Fatherhood, Workforce Development and Family Strengthening practitioners with experiences, skills and information that will strengthen their ability to improve outcomes for low-income fathers and families, impacting boys and men of color. The PLI fulfills this mission through:          Creating opportunities for peer-to-peer exchange, and education and skill building;         Opening channels of access to information, resources and best practices; and         Providing support for hands-on coaching and partnership development. The PLI Academy, one program of PLI, is an eight-month (March-October), cohort-modeled fellowship program designed to assist nationally diverse field leaders in growing their network, leadership, expertise, and capacity in one or more of the following focus fields: Responsible Fatherhood, Family Strengthening, Workforce Development, and/or Boys and Men of Color. CFUF is currently seeking applicants for the third Cohort of the Academy, which will kick-off in March of 2015. 00:31:00Dads of Great Studentsnofatherhood,PTA,School Counselor,School,EducationSierra Elementary in Phoenix, AZ will be our featured school. (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with nearly 4000 schools participating. It all started with a coffee delivery for the teachers at the start of the school year not long after the Daily Grind opened. I noticed teachers working extremely hard to get the school year started. Decorating the class rooms (at their own expense) and planning…planning…planning. Attempting to make the year the most impactful that they could. What really woke me up was a teacher, with trailer in tow, hand loading cases of text books and dragging them down the hall to her class. I honestly believe that most people have no idea what a teacher goes through to “teach” our kids. I see teachers working non stop at the Grind (even on the weekends) planning their classes in an attempt to truly help our kids. With budget cuts and teacher layoffs, why do they do what they do? We all know it’s not the paycheck. I’m convinced it’s a sincere desire to really help the kids. What can we do to show our appreciation for our teachers? After all, a good teacher teaches….A GREAT TEACHER sparks a life long desire to seek knowledge and change the world for the better. One thing I have learned is that showing sincere appreciation for what one does causes them to excel. Truly appreciating a teacher ….makes a GREAT Teacher! We decided to provide a “healthy lunch” at the lowest possible price, while at the same time reaching out to the community to find partners to reward our teachers for what they do! Our desire is that appreciation from the community would encourage our teachers to be GREAT! (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with over 4000 schools participating. Today's WatchDOGS Radio Program: Privilege vs Punishment. Greg Strong will discuss the difference between privilege and punishment in the educational environment. There are two ways we have to motivate…punishment (authority-figure controlled) or privilege (peer-group supported). RF only deals in the privilege domain. RULES ARE FOR PRIVILEGING, NOT PUNISHING, in school and classroom environments. When students are privileged for obeying rules, they are looking forward to a positive consequence. On the other hand, when rules are associated with a punishment, fear of a negative consequence is what motivates behavior, or what we think motivates behavior. Students overwhelmingly (100%) have chosen  privilege as their motivation when given a choice. This study was conducted in 400 classes which represents over 800 peer groups that were given a choice. The privileges offered were earned by the peer groups and were either chatter breaks and/or working together. (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with nearly 4000 schools participating. Kristi, a mother of three young children, found that coordinating her children’s after-school activities was no small task and left a great deal of room for error. (Have you ever had your child on the bus while you are sitting in car line…? Then you race home trying to beat the bus! Or, how many times have you had to call the school office to relay a message to your child, or your child has called you during the school day?  Think about how disruptive that is to the teachers and your child?) With her homemade version of what was to become mybackpacktags, Kristi found the answer: Provide a child with the tools to be successful, and they will succeed! Every morning on the drive to school, Kristi and her children discuss their after-school plans. (Some days each child has a different plan!) Each child is responsible for changing his or her own tag and does so with confidence and pride. Kristi’s idea was so effective that teachers began recommending her idea and other families soon followed suit. Children were organized, prepared, and confident; Teachers were free of distractions about children’s after-school plans; and Parents went about their day knowing that their child would know where to go! Such a simple solution to a complex problem. In February of 2005, Katie L. Greer began developing an Internet safety program to deliver to Massachusetts students. The Corruption, Fraud and Computer Crime Division of the Attorney General’s Office was inundated with requests for Internet safety presentations, and Katie rose to the challenge of expanding the existing program she created. After leaving the Attorney General’s Office, Katie worked full time as an Intelligence Analyst for the Massachusetts State Police, where she was assigned to the Missing Children Clearinghouse. Concurrently, and in large part due to the increasing demands for technology/Internet safety education, Katie built her programs into a private business, which included seven different presentations spanning grades K-12 and college, that she tailored to accommodate the developmental and emotional differences in each age group. Additionally, Katie instructs parents, teachers, administrators, and law enforcement officials on digital safety/responsibility and issues pertaining to technology. Katie now travels the country speaking on issues of technology and Internet safety education. WD UniformThe Watch D.O.G.S. uniform is a critical element of a Watch D.O.G.S. program in a school for several reasons. It gives the school the confidence that the WatchDOGS volunteer will show up dressed appropriately. It gives the WatchDOGS Volunteer that he will be dressed appropriately when he arrives at the school. It erases what he does on the other 364 days of the year. Regardless of what the volunteer does for a career, all WatchDOGS are on a level playing field - a father or father-figure who cares. The small sacrifice of buying the shirt gives the dad the feeling of membership. (This is a very powerful statement) Increases visibility of the WatchDOGS program. It may generate interest of other potential volunteers and potential PTA members. It increases the accountability of the volunteer. It connects that dad to another 225,000 dads that are stepping up for our kids and schools across the nation. Men will wear the shirts to other school events to show their pride in the success of your program and to encourage other dads to step up and volunteer. There are two inportant points to remember: Don't sell the dads in your community short. Regardless of the economic conditions in your community, they will step up and buy the shirts and secure the committment. We have seen it time and time again in all kinds of communities. Please don't find ways to give the shirts away. We have found that give-away shirts can quickly become painting smocks or rags. They need to have a value in the shirt. When they make an effort to purchase the shirt, it has a higher value to the individual. Having a few shirts at the school that many volunteers wear and someone occasionally washes - well, that's just unsanitary and honestly kinda discusting.  ;-( Join us for more informaton.   00:26:00Dads of Great StudentsnoEducation,Parent Involvement,Administration,School,PrincipalThe Watch D.O.G.S. uniform is a critical element of a Watch D.O.G.S. program in a school for several reasons. Daily Schedule What is the difference between a mom volunteering in a school and a dad volunteering in a school? Our culture and tradition have been that mothers are accepted and expected to be active in children's lives and their education. The fact is that without moms, many school programs would not be possible. Educators are comfortable with moms coming and going at the school without many questions being asked. Unfortunately, many schools have accepted the thought that they only see dads when there is a problem.  At Watch D.O.G.S., we are working very hard to change the perception that dads only show up when there is a problem. We know that dads are not only wanted in schools, but they are very much needed in schools. We know this: Fathers want to be involved. They just have to be given the opportunity. We have to target men specifically. We have to make it a cool thing to do. Men are mission driven and task oriented. They are not going to come into the school and look for things that need "tidied up". Step #4 of the 7 Steps to Success is the Watch D.O.G.S. Personal Daily Schedule. As a Watch D.O.G.S. School, you are provided with all of the documents to create a schedule that will keep these guys busy and never wonder why they are there. When the schedule is used correctly, a WatchDOG will never feel as if he wasted a day off from work.  Our Special Guest will be Raymond Kusumi, Regional Outreach Chairman - Region #9 - Washington State PTA. Join us and we will discuss how to make this successful in your school.   00:31:00Dads of Great StudentsnoEducation,Father,Parent Involvement,PTA,PrincipalWhat is the difference between a mom volunteering in a school and a dad volunteering in a school? School Representative, PTA representative and any other WatchDOGS or PTA volunteers. Members of this team should have completed the 7 Steps to Success training, either through the conference call, or in a live training workshop. We will discuss what will be asked of the members of the Top Dog Team and what amount of time that they will be asked to commit. Our Special Guests will be Dave Flatt and John "Kirt" Kirtley of the Nevada PTA who will tell us about how Nevada PTA expanded their membership and male participation by instituting Watch D.O.G.S. and other MORE Alliance partners. Nevada PTA is the 2012 winner of the National PTA MP3 Male Participation Award. Please give us a call and tell us about your Top Dog Team and how you have implemented the Watch D.O.G.S. program in your school. If you do not currently have a Watch D.O.G.S. program, here is your opportunity to learn about it and call in and ask questions. It is essential that the teachers are willing to bring Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers into their classroom and give them real, engaging and important roles. A Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer will not stay with his child or in one classroom all day. These volunteers should get a chance to see many classrooms and many areas of the school. More often than not: dads gain a true appreciation for the job that the teachers do. Support at home increases. Students get the message that their education is important when their dad takes a day off from his career to be at the school. Let's discuss innovative ways to get positive male role models into your school. One of the most important elements of your Watch D.O.G.S. program is your launch events. A mid-year launch event such as Donuts With Dad will re-energizes your program for the second half of the school year. It also gives those guys that didn't sign up at your Pizza Night a chance of redemption. It's also a good chance to get those mid-year PTA memberships. Now is the time to be planning your DWD event. It is very simple and your Implementation Guide gives you step-by-step instructions. Fathers and Father Figures are there for your school. You just have to know how to make them feel welcome and excited about being there. All you have to ask is for one day a year. Over 200,000 fathers nation wide have participated in the Watch D.O.G.S. program in 2400 schools in 42 states and D.C. We have also recently launced a Watch D.O.G.S. program in Mexico and soon in Puerto Rico.  The National PTA and 11 State PTAs have seen Watch D.O.G.S. as an avenue to increase male participation and membership at the local school level. Schools find that this inexpensive and simple program is a great way to increase community networking and bring additional resources to the school. It also brings new and excited members to your PTA and other school activities. Join Keith Schumacher and Steve Helton, Top Dog Coordinator at Central Elementary School in Cambridge, Ohio.
