When her landlord chucked her out for, in his words, “making the apartment into one hell of a downer,” she redoubled her efforts, and collected four times the rejection slips in half the time, single-handedly causing the first paper shortage in U.S. history. But she persevered, improved greatly over the years, and here we are. A graduate of both Houghton College and the Institute of Children's Literature, Sandy received her MLS from Rutgers University while working as a full-time music teacher and a freelance author. Sandy is the webmaster and writer of an award-winning, internationally-known web site called American Folklore that features retellings of folktales from each state. This site was created as part of a graduate study at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey in October 1997 and is used daily by teachers throughout the world in lesson plans for students of all levels. Stories from the site have also been used in college text books and in Masters level programs. D.S. Scott returns to our show with several new Dark Poems! When D. S. Scott was fourteen, a friend suggested he write a short story. He began writing and immediately took an interest in it. Matthew Fitzgerald - Matt was just a kid when he wrote his first story. At eight years old, he penned a tale of two brothers orchestrating a daring rescue to break their grandfather out of a hospital, where he was being held against his will. The story was a way of exploring his own need to help his grandfather, who was spending a prolonged duration in the hospital during a struggle with brain tumors. Matt had learned at a young age that books could provide adventures and absolutions otherwise unavailable to us, but couldn’t quite find the one needed for this, so he wrote it himself. It’s of some import to note that Matt is a poet first and foremost. He went to St. Michael’s College in Vermont, where he majored in English literature. While there, he also explored a love for theater and theater management, one he had built while working at the local community college theater through high school. Inspired by a more flowery script, he dove into Shakepseare, Poe, and Johnson- he is always looking for those weird abstracts that have a knack for returning the dive by staying with us, even after the story is over. And in our second hour: Mark Stokes - 22 years old Born and raised in Yorba Linda, California, grew up as the youngest of four boys in his family. Easily influenced by his big brothers, Mark would enjoy doing any of the hobbies they took on. Music being one of them, he would grab his guitar, turn the radio on and begin jamming out, quickly learning songs by ear for pure enjoyment! At the age of 15, times became rough and he moved to a quaint town in the North Georgia mountains - Dahlonega. Here he lived only with his parents and lost contact with two of his brothers in California.
