How is it that some people wind up on top of the social heap and others wind up on the bottom? This question, which sociologists refer to as social mobility, has been studied for decades. Recently, the prominent sociologist Robert Putnam has published a new book that examines social mobility, income equality and the American Dream.

What he uncovers is disturbing. Putnam says that social mobility is poised to plunge in the years ahead, shattering the American Dream.

Why is this so and what can be done about it?

On Friday, May 29, at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) I will be discussing this topic with my guest Mary Fernandez, the President of MentorNet, a division of Great Minds in STEM™. MentorNet implements a national, guided, one-to-one mentoring program that matches STEM students with STEM professionals in high-quality, virtual mentorships. By the way, STEM is the acronym for science, technology, engineering and math.

This podcast is produced in cooperation with the University of Massachusetts at Boston's Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring and Vince Reardon.
