However, Erik Karlsson the Ottawa Senators defenseman has yet to resign with Ottawa or sign with any other NHL team. Karlsson has made many believe that he does not want to play in Ottawa after he turned down their qualifying offer.  The Tampa Bay Lightning have been one of the front runners to sign the two time Norris Trophy winning defenseman. The problem is since Karlsson is a restricted free agent, the Ottawa Senators have to agree to trade him for something in return. The Lightning are low on cap space especially with the recent 9.5 million dollar contact given to Nikita Kucherov for 8 years. Recording 109 points and ending the regular season as the top team in the Pacific division. While the first three rounds of the playoffs have treated them well including a first round sweep of the Los Angeles Kings and a 4-1 series win over the Winnipeg Jets in the third round was enough to send the Knights to the Stanley Cup Finals. However, Vegas has now met it's kryptonite in the Washington Capitals! The six goals scored in game 1 just allowed Vegas to squeek out a 6-4 victory in game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Unfortunately, games 2, 3, and 4 were taken by the Capitals who have used their physical play to their advantage. With the opportunity to win the series in the backyard of the Capitals and head to the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, the Lightning let it slip right through their fingers. The Lightning lost 3-0, picking up their first shutout loss of the 2017-2018 playoffs. The Capitals dominated the Lightning in the faceoff category with a 54% versus Tampa's 46% on faceoffs. The physical play of the Washington Capitals who had a total of 39 hits in the game forced the Lightning to have to make quick decisions which resulted in turnovers. Game 7 of the series will be played in Tampa this Wednesday at 8:00pm est. In their inaugural season the Las Vegas Golden Knights blew past the very talented Winnipeg Jets with a 4-1 series win.
