Mostly all of the big names in free agency around the NHL have either signed with another team or resigned with their current team. However, Erik Karlsson the Ottawa Senators defenseman has yet to resign with Ottawa or sign with any other NHL team. Karlsson has made many believe that he does not want to play in Ottawa after he turned down their qualifying offer.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have been one of the front runners to sign the two time Norris Trophy winning defenseman. The problem is since Karlsson is a restricted free agent, the Ottawa Senators have to agree to trade him for something in return. The Lightning are low on cap space especially with the recent 9.5 million dollar contact given to Nikita Kucherov for 8 years.
Although Lightning GM Steve Yzerman has made it clear that Kucherov's contract will not prevent the Lightning from adding another big contract.
