Our guest this morning is Richard Foss, journalist, author, culinary historian, and lecturer based in Manhattan Beach.

Richard is also our local food writer for the Easy Reader News and keeps us up to speed on the South Bay dining scene, which began exploding about ten years ago.

When the coronavirus pandemic caused a total shutdown of the economy, governments, companies, restaurants, retail shops, and service providers scrambled to reimagine how to conduct business and keep their doors open, metaphorically speaking.

While many businesses continued to operate with employees working from home, the restaurant industry was particularly hard hit.

Faced with emergency mandates from every level of government, the initial shutdown, partial re-opening, another shutdown, special equipment and PPE costs, staff shortages, and breakdown of the supply chain, it’s been a harrowing rollercoaster ride for restaurants large and small.

South Bay restaurants have managed the crisis in a variety of ways - some chose to wait it out and closed their doors for the duration; others became neighborhood markets; many now offer only take-out and/or delivery; countless eateries have taken to the streets, parking lots, curbs and alleys for alfresco dining; and sadly, too many have closed for good.
