While serving in the U.S. Navy, he trained in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases becoming Board Certified in both fields. After his Naval commitment he entered the private practice of infectious disease in Melbourne, Florida. Later he was named Medical Director and then CEO of Health First Health Plans, which, during his tenure, was one of the nation's top health plans according to the US News and World Report/National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) rankings. Over his career it gradually became clear to Dr. Weiss that traditional healthcare, even in the best medical centers, wasn't resulting in improved health or wellness for most Americans. In his words, "I realized that the greatest burden of illness in our members was directly related to their lifestyles, and that more or better care wasn't going to help most of them. Thereafter, I became committed to helping individuals change their lives, improve their health and avoid illness in the first place." Feeling this call to action, Dr. Weiss left his leading role in traditional healthcare to reach people directly and help them take control of their health. 00:27:00TheSocialExpertnohealthcare,physicians,social media, online communities, social networksOur Guest this week is Peter J Weiss, MD., author of More Health Less Care. Keith Jenkins is a realtor and loan officer in San Diego. After graduation, Keith went for a short stint in the Marine Corps. Keith Jenkins has been involved in the real estate market for over 10 years in the San Diego, CA area. The Great "CRASH" of the real estate market made Keith realized that the way he was doing business was going to have to change. Business had dried up, lenders become very strict, and housing prices plummeted. Finding clients all of a sudden became very difficult. After a 2 year "break" from the real estate business, Keith got back involved. Keith did the "traditional" marketing of flyers, going to networking meetings, and contacting old clients, but it just wasn't working. Then he came up with an idea to really help the other people promote their businesses, in turn promoting his own. He came up with an idea called "the big idea network" Basically what they are doing is giving small businesses exactly what they need to grow their businesses, a compelling offer, social media presence, face to face meetings (for those that are geographically desireable) and a continuation of their marketing through the "group" aspect of facebook. In the future they plan on using some of the dues money to actually promote the group online, in turn promoting each business individually. 00:26:00TheSocialExpertnosocial media,Facebook,Twitter,Networking, small businessTune in this week to hear my guest Keith Jenkins talk about his success in using social media and leveraging networking online and offline. She is CEO of Nicastro Consultants, has over 20 years experience working with colleges, universities and organizations on strategic planning, information technology implementation, project management, training and facilitation. she partnered with CompuWorks, a leader in technical training, to produce and leverage cloud-technology and a new training paradigm- a video-book, “Have you Googled Your Child’s Name?”- A Social Media and Cyber-Safety Primer. The purpose of this vBook is two-fold, to educate and engage families and schools in social media and raise money for the Phoebe Prince foundation. While editing the vBook, Doreen realized that it was Phoebe’s story that was the underlying motivation of this endeavor. Our kids live in a cyber-world with little adult knowledge and guidance. Few adults have the technical skills equipped to keep up. Our kids are technically savvy but are not necessarily worldly when it comes to decision making. Do our kids really know the value of privacy, confidentiality and safety in an online world? They need parental involvement when it comes to social media activities; it impacts and influences their decision making. The best protection is education, communication, conversation and engagement. Doreen has a Bachelor of Science degree from Suffolk University in sociology and criminal justice, a master in public health from Boston University and three certifications: emergency management, social media strategy and Networlding facilitation. In addition, she has an adjunct-faculty appointment in public health policy management at Boston University School of Public where she has taught technology applications to graduate medical and public health students. Please Join Us as we discuss social media and your children online. Doreen and TheSocialExpert are both providing information through books, seminars and talk shows to educate the public. 00:29:00TheSocialExpertnosocial media, awareness, cyber bullying,Facebook,MySpaceOur guest this week is Doreen Nicastro.
