Cathy's statements led to a national debate when a Chicago alderman refused to allow a Chick-fil-A to be built in his district.  He even received the backing of Chicago's mayor, Rahm Emanuel. The alderman's statement prompted Fox News host, Mike Huckabee, to announce a Chick-fil-A national 'Appreciation Day' which led to record sales for the company. The LGBT community countered by having a national 'Kiss-in Day' at all Chick-fil-A in order to protest the statments made by the executive. So far neither President Obama nor the Republican Party presumptive nominee, Mitt Romney, have weighed in on the issue. Chick-fil-A is an Atlanta based company that is known for its strong Christian values even closing on Sundays in order for people to be able to go to church. 01:51:00Savvy Talk RadionoChick fil A,Gay Marriage,Free Speech,Black People,LGBTWhen Chick-fil-A executive Don Cathy went on a radio show and professed his thoughts on same sex marriage, he placed his company in the middle of a firestorHot Topic Sunday: Black People vs. Gay Marriagehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/thesavvysista/2012/05/13/hot-topic-sunday-black-people-vs-gay-marriageCurrent Eventshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/thesavvysista/2012/05/13/hot-topic-sunday-black-people-vs-gay-marriage/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/thesavvysista/2012/05/13/hot-topic-sunday-black-people-vs-gay-marriageSun, 13 May 2012 22:00:00 GMTHot Topic Sunday: Black People vs. Gay Marriage This past week President Obama announced his support of Gay Marriage.  This announcement literally sent shock waves through the Black Community as a lot of people took to Twitter, as well as Facebook, to profess their disappointment. PART 2 of our Trayvon Martin Coverage! Join us on Savvy Talk Radio as we continue to discuss the tragedy surrounding the death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin.  I was listening to Burce Springsteen's "American Skin (41 Shots)" a song he wrote about slain African immigrant Amadou Diallo and it made me wonder how could we be in this place again? We had Diallo, Sean Bell, Oscar Grant, Robert Tolan Jr., Rekia Boyd and countless other men and women of color who have been shot or killed and justice never served.  We marched and protested but yet it seems as though a lot of our pleas for justice is falling on deaf ears because here we are again discussing the issue of  racial profiling and why it appears as though a black life is considered a worthless life. This past week there was more information that came out surrounding the tragic events.  A surveillance video showing alleged shooter, George Zimmerman, after shooting Martin has further spurred outrage.  Zimmerman claimed that Trayvon beat him to within an inch of his life, but yet there appears to be no injuries on him. Those that are supporting Zimmerman say that people are rushing to judgment, but can we really rush to judgment if no one is ever arrested? How can we ever heal this country around the issue of race if there are those of us who refuse to discuss the issue or listen to our cries for help? Most Americans today have some form of pain killer in their possession in the form of a prescription drug. No matter what the ailment is, most Doctors have no problems prescribing medication to their patients. Depending on the ailment, a doctor may prescribe some very heavy medications with euphoric side effects. Even prescriptions such as Ritalin can cause side effects that mirror those of Cocaine. Could it be that a person would use these types of prescription drugs for purposes other than what they were originally prescribed? Is there a political strategy to separate black people from President Obama or has he done enough damage on his own?  With the unemployment numbers in the black community steadily going up, there is a rising number of dissenting voices getting louder in the community.  Joining a growing list of prominent black leaders who have publicly criticized the President is that of Rep. Maxine Waters.  In a recent stop in Detroit, Waters questioned the President's bus tour to the rural Midwest while bypassing the urban areas that have a huge black population.  So the question is: Have African Americans let their positive feelings of having the first Black President blur their vision of his job performance or is there something more sinister going on? The absence of a father in a child's life, whether it be a male or female child, is a hole many find impossible to fill. It is that hole that cause many women to seek love in the arms of many different men because they themselves never felt that love from the first man who was supposed to love them. And so, they follow a destructive path in hopes of finding the love they should have received at home. It is this same hole that darkens the spirit of boys who eventually become men. This hole in their spirit causes them to act out in violent and destructive ways because they are not equipped with the tools to be able to express the frustrations they are feeling about not having their father in their life. The resentment and anger they feel for their father can leave them in an emotional purgatory.  Join us on Savvy Talk Radio w/ The Savvy Sista as we discuss how people can reach a place of forgiveness for their father and be able to move on with their lives.  Please feel free to join this conversation be calling 718-664-6383.  You can also join us in the chat room at www.blogtalkradio.com/thesavvysista. 02:04:00Savvy Talk RadionoAbsentee Fathers,Forgiveness,Emotional Purgatory,Therapy,Black CommunityThe absence of a father in a child's life, whether it be a male or female child, is a hole many find impossible to fill. Has the ongoing debate between natural hair vs. relaxed hair further divided black women?  Hair was a thing that use to bond black women whether it was sitting in the beauty salon for hours or sitting in our grandmother's kitchen waiting for the straightening comb, we were united in our hair exploits.  Hair was a thing we all had in common, but not anymore. Carmen Jones, of  the website, Deeply Rooted Beauty, wrote a very powerful essay, Natural vs. Relaxed: Modern Day Willie Lynch Letter, that basically equated the ongoing debate between natural hair and relaxed hair to that of the fictitious Willie Lynch Letter.  Although the letter was proven to be a hoax, the tenets contained in it are very much real as to the dividing of the black community. The U.S. Bureau of Justice estimated that as of 2008, there were over 846,000 black men in prison, making up 40.2 percent of all inmates in the system. But in a recent talk, noted author Michelle Alexander put those numbers in grave historical perspective. “More African American men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began,” Alexander, an Ohio State law professor, recently told listeners at the Pasadena Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union. Alexander’s seminal book, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” argues that prisons have become the latest form of economic and social disenfranchisement for young folks of color, particularly black men. In it, she grapples with a central question: If crime rates have fluctuated over the years and are now at historical lows, then why have rates of incarcerated men of color skyrocketed over the past 30 years? With unemployment for African Americans nearly double that of the national average as well as some other pressing issues, it would appear that the thrill is gone. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." But the question is has society made it virtually impossible for parents to place their children on the right path? When anything goes wrong with a child we always want to blame the parents, but have we as a society created a society where it is virtually impossible for the parents to be successful in raising their children? When the Montana Fishburne sextape was released many pointed the fingers at her father, Laurence, but did we as a society play a part in this young woman seeking out this path since we in fact created her idol Kim Kardashian? The latest reality show that has black women all abuzz is 'The Ultimate Catch' starring NFL player Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson. During the selection of women for the show Chad chose to select majority white and hispanic women leaving his choice of three black women until the very end. Of course this got a lot of black women upset and they took to the internet to express their frustration with what appears to be another brother rejecting his fellow sistas. But the question remains, Should this upset black women? For so long we have complained about our images on television especially on these reality TV dating shows. We have shows like Flavor Flav's Flavor of Love and For the Love of Ray J. which seemed to do nothing but exploit black women. So what is it going to be? Do we want to be exploited or not? You have Senate Majority leader Harry Reid talking about then candidate Obama's lack of a 'Negro Dialect' and his light skin making him an acceptable candidate that America could support as a prime example of the foolishness that is going on. You have the prestigious Essence magazine placing Reggie Bush on the cover and causing an uproar amongst it's readership. Everyone is getting in on the foolishness act from Gilbert Arenas, Sheila Dixon, Tavis Smiley, to the man suing the Jackson estate on behalf of the city of Los Angeles. You know they always say that the way you start the year is how you year is going to be. So is foolishness in for the year 2010? For over a decade Mr. Pettiford has been a recognized authority on human sexuality, interpersonal relationships and personal growth and development. 'Why We Hate Black Women' is a book that takes a critical look at the historical and contemporary lives of Black women in order to answer one question: Why are so many black women abused, abandoned, betrayed, devalued and hated by both their white and black counterparts? This quest for truth opens up a cultural Pandora’s Box of issues that date back over 400 years. Whether discussing corporate women, college women, church women or economically challenged women, their stories are the same. Whether they’ve reached the heights of an Oprah Winfrey or have struggled to make ends meet, there is one chord that binds them all together – the stigma of what it means to be black and female in America. Kelly and Chris Brown, the question has arisen as to whether or not we can appreciate someone's music while perhaps not liking the person. Michaela angela Davis wrote a very compelling article for Essence.com in which she divulge into this very topic. She discussed the social dilemma of tolerating violence against women for musical appreciation. Do we in fact turn a blind eye to the transgressions of some of our artists because they are so talented? By doing this, are we condoning their actions by purchasing their music or are we simply lovers of great talent? There is a long line of troubled artists throughout history. Why are we willing to forgive some artists and allow others to go on to immortal greatness? Join me as I discuss these questions with Rapper Rhymefest, music producer B.
