John Shelby Spong was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, New Jersey for 24 years before his retirement in 2001. His books have sold more than a million copies and he is a visiting lecturer at Harvard and at universities and churches worldwide. Spong has been a strong proponet of feminism, gay rights, and equality within both the church and society at large.
