Winning is everything?

There are have been two news events recently that highlight this issue.  First was the matter of deflating the footballs in the NFL playoffs and second was NBC news anchor Brian Williams not being truthful about a past war area experienes.

What causes us (mankind) to need to cheat, lie, or embellish to gain the advantage?

What have we created for ourself when we take action to gain advantage and power?  Is the price worth it?  Does it do damage to our soul to hinder our integrity?
