As for the Tigers, who took the White Sox 2 out of 3 this past weekend, and played .500 ball on the week, we'll touch on the latest news. We talk to former MLB Dave Pallone, who became the first openly gay umpire when he came out, and the author of the 1990 New York Times best-seller "Behind the Mask," which has recently been re-released. Pallone is best known for an incident in April '88, when he was pushed by then Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose while disputing a call. After Rose's ejection, Reds fans pelted the field with debris, and the game could only resume after Pallone left the field. The fracas resulted in Rose being suspended for 30 days. Pallone spent 10 years in the big leagues, starting when he was 1 of 8 umpires hired during the '79 MLB umpire strike. Pallone's career highlights include his working the '83 All Star Game, and the '87 NLCS. We'll discuss Pallone's life in baseball, his life after and the state of umpiring in MLB. You can learn more about Dave Pallone at his website, DavePallone.com. After we spend 45 minutes with Dave Pallone, we'll move on to our thoughts on the past week of Detroit sports. Expect Big Ten expansion, the Tom Izoo job watch, the last week of Tigers baseball, the Lions Louis Delmas and his 8 win prediction, and maybe even a little World Cup soccer (What's that buzzzzing noise? A vuvuzela!) to be on the night's agenda. We'll also name our respective Jerk of the Week at the end of the show! The Knee Jerks will interview former Detroit Pistons General Manager Jack McCloskey! Known as "Trader" Jack during his days in Detroit, McCloskey was the architect behind the legendary Bad Boys teams. Jack was GM of the Pistons from 1979 to 1992, and as you all know, won NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. In 2008, the Pistons honored the man who turned the Pistons into one of the NBA's model franchises by raising his name into the rafters of The Palace, alongside many of the players he either drafted (Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars) or traded for (Bill Laimbeer, Vinnie Johnson). We'll get Jack's thoughts on the current state of the Pistons and the NBA. We'll also reminisce about the wild, wonderful 1980's, the era when Jack took a long-time league doormat, and with smart drafting and smarter (sometimes risky) trades, turned the Pistons into an NBA power. After we spend time with one of the best GM's in Detroit sports history, the Jerks will turn our thoughts over to the past week in Detroit sports. At the end of the show, we'll also name our respective Jerk of the Week! As you might guess, the news the team is up for sale, and what the future might hold after what's become a disappointing season will be high on the discussion docket. Tigers: We'll give our thoughts on all the trade rumors surrounding the supposed availability of Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, Brandon Inge and even Miguel Cabrera. Lions: Another Sunday, another loss. Same old, same old, right? Not exactly, as Matthew Stafford showed a toughness in getting beat up by an aggressive Vikings defense we haven't seen in years from a Lions' QB. Coming up for the Lions is a huge game with the Browns, as the 1st overall pick in 2010 may be at stake. Wolverines: Another Saturday, another loss. Another Monday, another possible NCAA "issue". But it is tOSU week, so could it be possible the staggering to the end of the season Wolverines can step up their game? Uh...no. However, John Beilein's basketball team started the season with a bang, as Manny Harris had a triple double in a win over NMU. Funny how the Wolverines' fanbase is now pinning all their winning hopes on the hoopsters, when they were persona non grata a little more than two years ago. Pistons: Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon are showing signs of being a solid one-two scoring punch . Even more unexpected is the offensive firepower backup PG Will Bynum is bringing off the bench and the surprisingly effective Ben Wallace. As you might guess, we'll discuss Matthew Stafford's flameout in Seattle along with the current status of the Detroit Lions. Michael and Dean will give us their midseason grades, and just how they expect the Lions to finish the season. We'll tackle the who, what, where, how and why of the Detroit Lions' season to this point. After the Lions-fest, Eno and Big Al will take on the stories of the day in Detroit. Michigan Wolverines: After a pair of ugly losses to Illinois and Purdue, where do the Wolverines, and more importantly, Rich Rodriguez, go from here? Detroit Red Wings: Another day, another debilitating injury, as Jason Williams breaks his leg. Will GM Ken Holland continue to plug the ever widening roster holes from within? Detroit Pistons: Injuries are the story with the Pistons as well, as Rip Hamilton has missed all but one game with a sprained ankle, and Tayshaun Prince is out indefinitely with a ruptured disc in his back. Could the vets going down be a blessing in disguise? Will the remaining Pistons, who are extremely young and need to gel as a team, step up and show they can play in the NBA? (Matt's columns can be found at: http://bit.ly/19wIdi) Matt is a long-time Red Wings fan who is based out on the Left Coast. Yes, a Wings fan in Cali. After our Red Wings chat with Matt, we'll discuss the latest news in Detroit sports. After we talk with Matt, we'll get down to brass tacks, and talk Detroit sports. Detroit Lions: Was your confidence in the new regime shaken by a bad loss to the Rams? Stan Kwan, enemy of the people, or the anti-Christ? Detroit Pistons: From the first 3 games of the season, is it too soon to think we are watching a lottery team? Or are they a playoff team with so many new parts, they need time to gel? Detroit Red Wings: Injuries, injuries and more injuries, as Valtteri Filppula is out at least 6 – 8 weeks with a broken wrist. What's next? Wait...I don't want to know... Michigan Wolverines: When asked by the Wall St. Journal, the Michigan brass said they would have patience in regard to Rich Rodriguez. As an example, president Mary Sue Coleman used Tommy Ammaker, who got 6 years to run the basketball program into the ground. That was at least 2 years too much, if you ask fans of the Woilverines. Michigan St. Spartans: The Spartans had much higher expectations than the Wolverines. If Rich Rodriguez is on the hot seat, shouldn't Mark Dantonio be on an even hotter seat? Scott won the NBA Coach of the Year award in 1974 when he led the long downtrodden Pistons to the playoffs with 52-30 regular season record. Even though Scott was the most successful coach in Pistons' history to that point, he was fired by new owner Bill Davidson halfway through the '76 season. Scott then went on to be head coach of the Eastern Michigan (then known as the ) Hurons from '76 to '79. In 2008 Scott was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and selected to be a part of the Pistons' All-Time team, as one of the "30 All-Time Pistons." We're looking forward to talking old school NBA with Scott, who was the last coach hired by the Pistons founding owner, the eccentric Fred Zollner. We'll also touch base with Ray the on Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and the serious financial issues it is now facing. After our interview with Ray Scott, we'll ponder the past week in Detroit sports, including the following... Tigers: Is Aubrey Huff the solution to what ails the offense, the beanball fest, brawl & fallout in Boston, the struggle to hit with RISP, Justin Verlander's credentials as both an Ace and a Cy Young candidate, are role players placed in situations almost guaranteeing failure, how valuable is Brandon Inge, and the never-ending road woes. Lions: The exhibition opener, a win over the Falcons, pick a QB, Culppeper or Stafford, the pluses and minuses we saw on-field & Charles Rogers admitting he was a Cheech & Chong level pothead. Who, you ask? The long-time WDFN (R.I.P.) morning man, former WRIF Mike in the Morning show regular, and current Detroit Free Press blogger, Jamie Samuelsen! We'll cover the gamut of the Detroit sports landscape with the opinionated Jamie, discussing his experiences blogging for Free Press and get his take on the Lions and Tigers. Hopefully, we can talk a little inside baseball in regard to the troubled terrestrial radio business. After we speak to Jamie Samuelsen, we'll move on to our usual format, bitching about Detroit sports! We'll give our thoughts on the big news of past week, the Detroit Tigers trading for starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn at the trade deadline. Is adding only Washburn enough to win the mediocre Central? Do the Tigers still need a bat? Inquiring minds should listen! We then tackle the start of the Detroit Lions' training camp, the first of the Schwartz/Mayhew/Lewand era. Or should we call it the beginning of the Matthew Stafford era? From all accounts, the rookie QB is impressing the Lions' coaching staff during workouts. Not so impressive is the new free agent WR, Bryant Johnson, who will miss the first 2 weeks of workouts thanks to...road rash caused by a...wait for it...golf cart crash. If the Lions didn't have bad luck (or sign moronic receivers who wreck golf carts), they'd have no luck at all. We'll get on our soapbox in regard to the fate of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, which has amassed 6 figures worth of debt, despite having absolutely no overhead. The Hall is on the verge of auctioning off plaques of Detroit's greatest athletes to pay creditors, a stunning revelation. We'll also have a take on the state of Michigan losing 2 big time sporting events, the PGA's Buick Open and the IRL's Belle Isle Grand Prix. We'll also name our respective Jerk of the Week! Matt will be one of 17 men trying to win a model's heart on the new reality series "Megan Wants a Millionaire", debuting on VH1 on Sunday, August 2. To learn more, Matt's site is MattRiviera.com. He's also on MySpace at myspace.com/therealmattriviera. You can go to VH1's show page (http://bit.ly/WYxUg)to learn more. After we talk wrestling, reality TV and women, we'll move on to Detroit sports, including the past week of the Detroit Tigers. We'll touch on Brandon Inge's damaged knee, and if he should continue to play thru the pain despite his declining production, the so far successful return of Carlos Guillen, and whether the Tigers should stand pat at the upcoming trade deadline, as several local columnist have opined, or make an aggressive move, as most fans seem to want...no, DEMAND. We'll also talk Detroit Lions, as camp starts this week. The team has yet to sign 6 of their draft picks...anyone having Russ Thomas flashbacks yet? The rumors are swirling around Detroit's rookie QB phenom, Matthew Stafford, as he may have the inside track on the starter's job over Daunte Culpepper! There's other big news in the NFL, as Mike Vick was partially reinstated by commissioner Roger Goodell, and Brett Favre is still stringing the Minnesota Vikings along...but claims to be on the verge of making a decision. (Sure, Brett, sure...) In college football news, it's Big Ten Media Days, with the big local story being Michigan State picked to finish 3rd in the league, while Michigan boots another player, Justin Feagin, off the team, due to rules violations. Finally, are the state's golf fans going to have to say goodbye to the PGA's long running Buick Open at Warrick Hills? We'll also name our respective Jerk of the Week! Eno and Big Al will also discuss the latest sports news from a Detroit perspective, including the Tigers getting swept in New york despite pitching good enough to win, Joel Zumaya blows out his shoulders and is on the DL...again, a Detroit News baseball columnist (Lynn Henning) infers in print that All-Star CF Curtis Granderson is not focusing enough on baseball, an MSN Money article claims the Tigers are an "at risk" team for moving or contraction, and in non baseball news, the Pistons sign a power forward, Chris Wilcox. Today's topics include: Pistons - Rasheed Wallace is a Celtic, Joe Dumars shoots his wad in free agency, Carlos Boozer for Rip Hamilton trade talk, and who in the HELL is going to coach? And who is going to play in the paint, Boozer trade be damned? Tigers - Still in 1st place after another horrific weekend in the Twins' Baggiedome, losing 2 of 3. In better news, they have 3 All-Stars in Granderson, Veralnder and Jackson, with Inge in the running for the last man in vote. Finally, the a big homestand against Central division bottom feeders, KC and Cleveland, looms, and could allow the Tigers to have a solid divisional lead at the break.
