A pawpaw is a homely, unassuming thing on the outside; it's possible to unwittingly pass a tree laden with half a dozen of the things. But let's say you notice the pawpaws, and reach for a ripe one. The best way to enjoy a pawpaw is right there in the woods. Rip the skin away, slurp the pulp, and spit out the seeds. It's a gooey, sensuous, primal experience. You have now eaten from the tree of earthly knowledge, and guess what? It tastes really damn good. There are towns named Paw Paw in Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Oklahoma (Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states make up the pawpaw hot zone.) Here's the catch: easy-bruising pawpaws have a short shelf life and don't currently fit in the business model of big agriculture. All times are in Central Time. You may have noticed that the days have been getting shorter, and the nights have been drawing in. An equinox occurs when the sun passes directly over the Earth's equator, resulting in a day and night that equal in length. There are two equinoxes every year - one around March 22 and one around September 22. In the southern hemisphere the seasons are flipped, and the September equinox marks the start of spring. After this point, the days will get shorter and the nights will get longer until the wintersolstice on December 21, when the pattern will reverse.  The equinox occurs because of the tilt of the Earth in relation to the sun. This is what causes the seasons. The Earth's tilt is 23.5 degrees relative to the plane of its orbit and means that, although one revolution of the planet takes 24 hours - it's different depending on the time of year. During the summer time, the Northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. So we get longer days as more light falls on this part of the surface. In the winter time it's the Southern hemisphere that gets the majority of the light. On the autumnal equinox, the Earth hits the turning point in its orbit where neither the North or the South poles are tilted towards the sun. This means the amount of daylight and night time is the same at all points on the Earth's surface. The word equinox is Latin for "equal night". Meteorologists use it as the official turning point in the seasons because, although it can vary from year to year, it allows for the most accurate record-keeping. Viewers along the path of totality were treated to two minutes of nighttime in the day and the otherwise unimaginable sight of a 360-degree sunset After weeks of anticipation, the sight of the moon’s silhouette passing directly in front of the sun, blotting out all but a halo-like solar corona and causing a precipitous drop in temperature, drew whoops and cheers from onlookers gathered in cites across the US. As quickly as it came, the eclipse receded, as the umbra – the location of the total shadow – bolted across the continent at an average speed of 1,700 miles per hour. When all is said and done the “totality” will have engulfed a strip of the country occupied by 12.2 million people, joined temporarily by millions more who traveled to the 70-mile-wide eclipse path for the spectacle. Viewers in the narrow totality band were treated to as much as two minutes, forty seconds of utter nighttime in the middle of the day and the otherwise unimaginable spectre of a 360-degree sunset.
