Michael Aufrichtig, Head Coach of Columbia University Fencing, joins Tom and Joe to discuss the state of the sport in 2020. From a software salesman with no prior professional coaching experience, to the champion of the “Moneyblade” approach, Aufrichtig has utilized analytics in recruitment and coaching to guide CU Fencing to x3 NCAA Championships and x11 Ivy League Championships in just nine years. The group discusses the confluence of philosophy in business and sport, the importance of customized communication, and the keys to building a family culture in an individual sport. Finally, Aufrichtig dishes on strategies for maximizing development amidst Covid-19, the potential for CU Fencing alums in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and what the NCAA’s new NIL legislation means for fencers moving forward.
