I ran out of prednisone and had to stop taking it, cold turkey. Many of you know that you don't just go off prednisone cold like that. You're supposed to wean yourself slowly, or risk serious withdrawal symptoms. In prednisone withdrawal, you can experience fatigue, flu-like symptoms, mood dips, inflammation and swelling, among other symptoms.  All of these symptoms flare up while your body gets used to making its own cortisol again. Some quick background info on me: Seventeen years ago my diagnosis was autoimmune disease. Over the years, my symptoms have included rheumatoid arthritis in every joint of my body including my neck and rib cage, along with brain and nervous system symptoms, skin rashes, hormone imbalances, etc. Some doctors have told me that my autoimmune disease was triggered by lyme disease, and is now considered chronic lyme disease.  It's complicated, I know. What else is new?  So anyway, back to the prednisone. I was almost off of it, finally, after using it for a flare in symptoms that I experienced this past winter.  I ran out on a Friday. I thought I had another full bottle in the bathroom cabinet somewhere. But I could not find it anywhere! My prescription didn't have any refills and my doctor's office wouldn't be open until Monday. I freaked out. This meant that my knees and fingers and wrists were going to swell. I was going to get night chills and a sore throat. I went into emergency mode and... "Over the years, various approaches to solving addictions have been tried with marginal success.   Historically, addiction was first thought to be a moral problem to be addressed by law enforcement. In the early 20th century, a psychological/psychoanalytic model was adopted, based on the poorly substantiated belief that addicts and alcoholics were simply medicating their emotional wounds.   Alcoholics Anonymous then emerged and achieved a modicum of success by promoting the 12-step philosophy, which bypasses immorality or psychological rationales as the cause, focusing instead on spirituality.   The psychopharmacological approach came next. It was based on the assumption that addiction is caused by a or Prozac deficiency in the brain.  Substantial education and prevention efforts have also been made for decades.   For the most part, addictions are currently handled by some combination of these models, but with marginal success.  How can we do better? All of these approaches have made contributions, but none of them fully addresses the critical brain/body connection, so let’s explore the little known scientific facts about addiction. I have been through all of these emotions, repeatedly, both for long and short periods of times. These feelings are a healthy and normal part of our emotional cycles. What is not healthy is when you get stuck in a bad-feeling emotion and it is hindering your participation in, or enjoyment of, your life. Here I am, six and a half months into my cross-country move from D.C. to L.A. It's been wonderful and happy and easy, until recently. The Take Back Your Health Conference™ is growing into a bi-coastal event. I'm working on the first TBYH book and we're going to start videos in the next few months. Lately I have felt out of balance. I know that this is because I am stretching myself thin with my work, in an unfamiliar city. When you stretch yourself thin, you lose sleep, you walk around on edge, you get frustrated with others when they take your time, and emotions, like loneliness and self-doubt, become magnified. I let it go too far - to the point of being paralyzed from action. I couldn't even write this email to you all! I finally turned to a good friend of mine. My lover, friend and boyfriend. He sees me more clearly than I can see myself sometimes. I told him that I felt like I was losing myself in the enormity of the changes I had made this year. That's when he did something for me that changed my mood instantly. I was able to get back to writing this email to you and our relationship grew deeper for it.
