A gathering place called the Root’s Café will have a grand opening soon in Providence, Rhode Island. It will create a vibrant sense of place in the capital city where artistic, cultural, and entertainment venues of the finest quality will serve as the basis to bring talented artists and diverse people together. Len Cabral, one of the founders of the cafe will join us and talk about how vital it is to have a multicultural, artistic and entertainment space in the community. Len is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning storyteller and author. For more than 30 years, he has been engaging and entertaining audiences with his performances both nationally and internationally. The influence of his great grandfather, a whaler who immigrated to America from Cape Verde, can be seen in Len’s exuberant retelling of African, Cape Verdean and Caribbean folktales as well as original stories and tales from around the world. He is a popular storyteller at theaters, schools and festivals throughout the United States and has performed at festivals in Ireland, Belgium, England, Wales and Austria, Holland and Bali. He also teaches the art of storytelling at colleges and conferences and leads in-service workshops for school departments and businesses. He is the recipient of the National Storytelling Network 2001 Circle of Excellence Oracle Award, and he has been honored to grace a page of Stephan Brigidi’s book, Remarkable People.
