From age twelve and for the next two decades, Lee Gant tried it all - suicide, cutting, drugs and alcohol. She was raped, institutionalized, incarcerated and pronounced dead after an overdose wasn't enough to end the nightmare. Getting sober was the first step in survival and recovering from growing up with an abusive father, but it was the comfort of knitting that saved her life. Yep, two long needles and lots of yarn.   Now a master knitter, Lee is a renowned published knitwear designer, sought after teacher, and a household name among knitting enthusiasts across the country. Her pieces and designs have appeared in books, and magazines across the country and online.   A happy and healthy mother of four, Lee currently teaches teens, adults and youth groups how to knit in hopes that the comfort it brings will give them a sense of accomplishment and skills for coping with the struggles of everyday life. Lee teaches and facilitates workshops at community centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, drug and alcohol centers, and other non-profit organizations. Her goal is to help every community establish "knit and crochet groups" for children and young adults to attend at no cost with materials donated by the 78 million knitters across the country. At age twenty-two after the suicide of her older brother Jeannie allows LAYLA, a counter personality to take over. LAYLA is tough and street smart who turns to the dark side of stripping and prostitution.  LAYLA was a nickname given to her after a man sang the song Layla by Eric Clapton to her in a bar trying to win her affection. The twist is that through it all she finds her healing. At each juncture she is forced to look at the duality of life, in the end LAYLA the personality never completely consumes Jeanie, actually LAYLA helps her. It seems that at the darkest moments when she should just die, Jeannie the light and LAYLA the dark work in tandem to survive hell on earth. At the age of twenty- six when she is performing what turns out to be her final trick and she faces possible death once again, she sees her father clearly in the face of the man forcing himself on her. This realization coupled with the love of and for her son frees her from the demon of her inner rage. Her quest for understanding of her life, her crushingly painful initiation as a shaman/healer, takes a positive turn. Through a series of synchronistic events she is drawn to and ultimately embraced, adopted and mentored by Basil Braveheart, a Lakota Sioux medicine man and elder. Her life begins to find purpose and hope. Suddenly her twenty-year-old son is killed and Jeannie is taken to the deepest grief and ultimately the highest spiritual connection. She travels to the mountains of Peru, the deserts of Mexico and turns to the indigenous culture of North America to find answers to her life. She is shown that the universe is good - that life is sacred energy in motion. And we see again the book’s main theme – redemption begins with every step forward. 01:02:00sunshine10171noMental health, abuse,Rape,Author,SpeakerAt age twenty-two after the suicide of her older brother Jeannie allows LAYLA, a counter personality to take over. After losing a child at the age of 16, she married for the first time a year later. The couple gave birth to a daughter and remained together until the abuse from her husband was too much to handle and they divorced a few years later but shared joint custody of their daughter. After finding her second husband and struggling to find work, the two of them, on the advice from her husband's friend, moved to Indianapolis, Indiana to make a fresh start. Susan was glad to go, after hiding the shame from her friends and family of yet another abusive husband. She found a promising career in the concrete pipe industry as an engineer and became very close with her co-workers. So close that they became concerned when she would show up at work with injuries inflicted by her husband. Her co-workers had enough and were willing to help her out of the situation she was in; and it was a success but it came at a large price. During the years she was married to her second husband, she was going through a custody battle with her first husband over their daughter. Many of the court dates she was unwilling to attend because of her appearance after an attack by her second husband. She eventually lost her rights to her daughter. 00:30:00sunshine10171noAuthor,abuse,Domestic violence, emotional,SurvivorSusan Dean was born on June 27, 1973 and lived in Hammond, Indiana for twenty-one years. But THATS not my story.... 2 weeks into  therapy I recovered memories of Torture at the hands of my dad and his mom - from the time i was 4 until I was 14.  Anytime I wasn't perfect (and their definition changed) they hurt me - from sexual abuse to physical and emotional torture - in the cellar where they had a chamber built.  Nothing short of SICK.  They even left me in a well overnight with the lid on to force me to "submit" to them.  Talk about having your entire life pulled out from under you.....Today - 4 years later  - I am on the Other Side and moving into a new world, a new career focus and a new me.  Im starting to create programs that will leverage my learning to help others like me - kids and women and anyone who has ever been powerless in the face of others.... While I wouldn't want to repeat the experience I am thankful for both surviving and being blessed in the process. Since I am a Christian writer, you would be correct in assuming that I credit the grace of God for helping me make it from from there to here, and for the thirty years in between. He Came Looking for Me was released in September 2011. The book answers the question, "What do the story of an unwanted horse and the promise of a mansion in heaven have in common?" I know what it's like to be lost, defeated, hopeless, and willing to give suicide a try. I also know there is no such thing on this earth as a bottomless pit because I found the bottom. It's there and it's hard. The promise of hope is the subject of the book. 01:05:00sunshine10171nospiritual,christian,Author,survivor,abuseLynn Baber Presently a director of Amazing Grays Ministry Lynn looks for opportunities to share God’s message of grace with as many people as possible throughSearch for Happiness:My Journey from Darkness into the Lighthttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/survivors/2012/02/05/search-for-happinessmy-journey-from-darkness-into-the-lightFamilyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/survivors/2012/02/05/search-for-happinessmy-journey-from-darkness-into-the-light/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/survivors/2012/02/05/search-for-happinessmy-journey-from-darkness-into-the-lightSun, 05 Feb 2012 21:00:00 GMTSearch for Happiness:My Journey from Darkness into the LightThis is a feel good story of one man's life, my own. I want everyone to know through reading this that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Today is not like the 1960's and 1970's when I grew up with it and one one talked about it. This books starts out at the very beginning giving you a history of his family and the problems encountered from day one of his life. It then take you on a roller coaster journey from first to twelfth grades, explaining all along the way the problems that I had with ADD and my parents thinking I had a reading problem in third grade. It also addresses behavioral issues that I exhibited. These were finally linked to the learning disorders, which resulted in depression in my later years. I sense that my parents are doing the best that they feel is right for me but I never get the help that I need and at thirteen as I enter my teen years it starts going down hill like a snowball. I got into smoking and drugs to get the acceptance that I thought I needed. I end up with a very real self esteem problems and start going to therapists at the age of fifteen and will continue to go on and off ever since. Suffering with ADD, I continuously start projects and never finish them. I move back and forth between the East and West coast looking for that something that is actually right within my grasp if I only looked inside. http://www.51061.authorworld.com/ 00:31:00sunshine10171noDepression,abuse,psychology,mental health,BooksThis is a feel good story of one man's life, my own.
