She welcomed incoming and returning students with a talk about Stetson University's positive influence on her life. Stetson, she said, is not just an academically outstanding institution of higher learning, it is a community and a family. "Stetson will nurture you, change you and prepare you for the path that is uniquely yours," she said. Background on Judge Marstiller: Born in Monrovia, Liberia, Judge Marstiller earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., and her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Stetson College of Law in Gulfport, Fla. In 2010, then-Governor Charlie Crist appointed Judge Marstiller to the First District Court of Appeal. Her varied legal career, which began in 1996, has been exclusively in service to the State of Florida. Judge Marstiller was serving as executive director for the Florida Elections Commission when she was appointed to the appellate court in 2010. She oversaw the investigation and prosecution of complaints filed with the commission and was the chief administrative officer for the agency. Prior to that, then-Attorney General Bill McCollum appointed Judge Marstiller associate deputy attorney general for the State of Florida in 2007. She served on the executive management team for the Office of the Attorney General, while serving as the agency’s general counsel. She was responsible for overseeing four agency divisions, including the Civil Rights and Opinions Divisions. 00:12:00StetsonU Talk Radionojudge,State of Florida,First District Court of Appeal, appellate court, convocationJudge Simone Marstiller: College will change your lifeQuiet, Justice, Love - How We Think of Blacknesshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/stetsonuniversity/2014/11/14/quiet-justice-love--how-we-think-of-blacknessCulturehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/stetsonuniversity/2014/11/14/quiet-justice-love--how-we-think-of-blackness/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/stetsonuniversity/2014/11/14/quiet-justice-love--how-we-think-of-blacknessFri, 14 Nov 2014 20:30:00 GMTQuiet, Justice, Love - How We Think of BlacknessKevin Quashie, Ph.D., was the guest lecturer for Stetson University's Social Justice Lecture Series in fall 2014. The professor in the Department of Afro-American Studies at Smith College spoke on “Quiet, Justice, Love." In his talk, Quashie discusses African-American culture, often considered expressive, dramatic and even defiant, characterizations which are linked to the idea of resistance. Indeed, these terms come to dominate how we think of blackness. He addresses the topic of reimagining how we think about black culture, about resistance and justice. He questions how the idea of quiet, as a notion different from silence and as a metaphor for one’s inner life, could include insight into how to be alive in ways that are aware of social violence, but that retain the power and grace that is part of being human. On this episode of Friends Talking Faith with The Three Wise Guys we continue our conversation with the students of Stetson about faith and the relevance of religion for the Millennial generation in the 21st century. It seems every religious group has its fundamentalists.  So, are religious people particularly prone to fundamentalism?  Or, is it just part of some people’s personality? And how about religion and politics?  Is there a line between faith and political involvement? Can we honor both our religious values and our responsibilities as a member of a diverse nation, at the same time? The topics for this program were selected by students at Stetson University. We’ll get into these difficult issues of fundamentalism and religion and politics from a faith perspective with the students.  Their questions, and our conversation with them is the content of this program. (This episode is presented here with permission.) The Pew Research Center says: "By some key measures, Americans ages 18 to 29 are considerably less religious than older Americans. Fewer young adults belong to any particular faith community compared to older people today. Also they’re less likely to be religiously affiliated than their parents’ and grandparents’ were, when younger. Fully one fourth of the Millennial generation are unaffiliated with any particular faith group. And more young people say that religion 'isn’t very important in their lives' compared to the elder generation." The topics for this program were selected by students at Stetson University. These young adults have some “significant” questions for us around the issues of inclusion regarding faith communities and religious authority. In So Rich, So Poor, Edelman suggests that public policies can have a positive impact on the labor market to create jobs. Specifically, he argues for a higher minimum wage, stronger labor standards in trade agreements such as NAFTA, returning to the higher tax rates of the 1990s for businesses and high earners, a macroeconomic focus on jobs rather than inflation and debt, a reinvigoration of unions, increases in benefits to low-income families such as the EITC, public housing and housing vouchers, and the child tax credit, and taking steps to reduce income inequality. Edelman is a lawyer, policy maker and law professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where he is faculty director of the Center on Poverty, Inequality and Public Policy.00:38:00StetsonU Talk RadionoPeter Edelman, poverty, social justice, income inequality, jobsPeter Edelman spoke at Stetson University in October 2013, as the first speaker in the university's Social Justice Lecture Series.
