JoVonna shares: In early 2000, influenced by the progressing movement towards vegan/vegetarian eating, I begin to find my own footing in this journey. As a result of becoming a vegetarian my approach to cooking evolved. As much as it was about the taste, and flavor and creative aspects of food, now I was pushing towards making sure that each meal was nutritionally substantial and sufficient. I have been influenced by my encounters with different styles, peoples and cultures to continue to bring what I have to offer as a cook to a higher level. One influential event was a trip to Kenya. In that trip, the seed of international cuisine and the idea for my food service endeavor Maitu Foods was planted. The materials used to manufacture most pads are derived from the petroleum industry and forestry. The absorbent core, made from chlorine bleached wood pulp with the addition of polyacrylate gels. The remaining materials are mostly derived from the petroleum industry, the cover stock used is polypropylene, with the leak-proof barrier made from polyethylene film. The extraction, production and manufacture of these plastics contributes nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide – ozone depleting gases; human toxins that lead to cancer and birth defects as well as chemicals that cause the acidification of trees. The high plastic content of these products ensures they remain in our environment for centuries as they are neither biodegradable nor recyclable. Disposal of used sanitary products by either flushing out into the oceans of the world, incinerating or depositing in landfill creates various pollutants including dioxins deposited in the sea through sewerage waste and air pollution from incinerators. Every woman can reduce waste and reduce harm to her womb by adopting simple, safe and earth-friendly practices in regards to her moon-time.
