Last Fall, Anne Sweeney laid down the gauntlet for GH viewers - "it's all about eyeballs".  Not quite.  With anything Disney, there are always clauses hidden in the fine print which lay out an advantage to the corporate entity as opposed to the loyal viewers.  Tonight we discuss the Agony & Ecstasy of the Anne Sweeney challenge.  And, like it or not, I'm going to tell you WHY Anne Sweeney is destined to WIN and cancel General Hospital.  It's as simple as that. We're going to discuss the DVR blackout of last Friday and how those failures may hurt the weekly ratings for GH.  Then a special message to you all about this journey of 4,637 days and how it has changed my life as this journey comes to a close.  Join the chat, get immersed in the discussion.   And prepare yourselves for a Sermonette which speaks to the truth without spin. 02:19:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,ATWT OLTL AMC GH GL AW BB YR DOOL,The Non-magic of Disney,Cable Coupon Campaign,Soap Fan Movements4,637 days ago I began a journey which started at 3 PM.  That was the final air date of the classic soap Another World on NBC.  AW was an old friend having firLoose Ends....http://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/03/02/loose-endsTelevisionhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/03/02/loose-ends/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/03/02/loose-endsFri, 02 Mar 2012 03:00:00 GMTLoose Ends.... Tonight we're going to tie up a few loose ends such as: The Cable Soap Channel Coupon Campaign is MORE relevant than you think and why. After several episodes of General Hospital under the brilliant writing of the soon to be Daytime Scribe Legend Extraordinaire Ron Carlivati, we help kick off GH March Madness Month in a huge way. We're hearing more rumors that folks in high finance and business seem to agree on one point: it is time for Disney to unload ABC before it ruins the network even further. We'll get to the bottom of a news item broken on Nelson Branco's Soap Opera Uncensored lasy week concerning just what “rights” Prospect Park may have for All My Children. And, finally, it's a discussion about “nature vs. nurture” in terms of DOOL. Some are convinced Will had no choice but to be gay due to his heritage. Others say an EJ and Will pairing would be compelling. Tonight we talk about the “gay issue” coming to DOOL and why I think the evolution of the character of Will is a great foundation for an in depth discussion on “nature vs. nurture” itself! So, join the conversation, pull up a chair and let's get LATHERED UP! I'm really looking forward to coming on air after being gone for a week. THIS will be a fun filled, INFORMATIVE episode! Whether you realize it or not, the fact is WE ARE GETTING NOTICED!  Two significant pieces in the New York Times plus the OLTL/AMC victory on the iVillage poll led to a segment on The Today Show.  We've talked with cable providers who have unequivocally stated that the latest SoapNET will be broadcasting is around April 18th.  So, we have PLENTY to discuss tonight as a cohesive movement going forward.  We have to get our acts together -- ESPECIALLY GH & DOOL fans.  Tonight a clear, concise explanation of the purpose of the Soap Cable Channel Campaign and where we stand.  We'll also discuss the appeal of GH actors & crew to start tuning in to GH as the new team tries to archive a 2.0 in March.  Soap fans have the edge -- we just need to recognize it!  Unlike so many who proclaim the soap genre "DEAD" we refuse to accept the notion at all.  It seems the sentiment springs only from people who have an ax to grind with the genre itself and we all should be wary of people who would just as soon see the genre die than work toward reinvigoration!  With the successes of Crystal Chappelle's Venice: The Series to the groundbreaking programming available on The SFN, we see a brilliant future for scripted serial programming both in broadcast and on line.  It takes creative minds with a vision of what the possibilities can be!  So, join the chat, hear what's up & make an impact! 02:35:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,ATWT OLTL AMC GH GL AW BB YR DOOL,The Non-magic of Disney,Sexism Ageism Cronyism,Cable Coupon CampaignYou've heard all the jokes about "soap on a rope".  Of course, for younger viewers they may not get it.  That's OK.  For a little over 10 months ABC Daytime faWhat would YOU write?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/02/21/what-would-you-writeTelevisionhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/02/21/what-would-you-write/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/02/21/what-would-you-writeTue, 21 Feb 2012 03:00:00 GMTWhat would YOU write? DOOL: We were filled with hope when the DOOL reboot happened the week after AMC aired its final network episode on ABC.  At last report the results are disappointing.  What's wrong with Salem and what ideas do DOOL fans have for pumping up those dwindling ratings? 3. GH: We all know it's coming.  The cancelation is imminent regardless of denials by pundits and ABC reps.  We've been sold this bill of goods before.  Just look back a year and remember all those Tweets from AMC & OLTL actors saying hey were "safe".  Yeah, they were as safe as a condom filled with staple holes.  We're getting ready for the age of Ron Carlivati. What doe she need to do to make GH come home? 4. YR - We can;t get over the negative comments we see daily about the direction of the residents of Genoa City.  Have they made an impact with the addition of Francis, Morgan and Williams?  What does YR really need to grab the viewer's attention? Then we're going to discuss SoapNET, ABC and THE REAL FUTURE of soap opera.  This promises to be one of the most controversial shows we've ever done.  Send me your ideas and I'll share them on air.  Join the chat or call in.  We're going to be fast paced, informative and as usual UPLIFTING because we BELIEVE in the genre and we KNOW we can make it come back to life as long as we stay on message! 02:08:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,ATWT OLTL AMC GH GL AW BB YR DOOL,The reinvention of the soap genre,Cable Coupon Campaign,Soap Fan MovementsFour soaps, four problems.  So let's take 20 minutes per show and get YOUR ideas on what YOU would do to FIX them.  Here are the questions for you to consider:Caliente Kainhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/02/17/caliente-kainTelevisionhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/02/17/caliente-kain/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2012/02/17/caliente-kainFri, 17 Feb 2012 03:00:00 GMTCaliente Kain Tonight we discuss the new soap documentary Soap Life: A Documentary on Daytime Drama with Heather DiPietro.  You can learn more about this project by visiting the website at Kickstarter.  There have been many questions asked about this project and tonight we will discuss it with one of the project's most ardent supporters. As I shared with many of you during the Christmas holiday, I watched the President’s speech honoring the five 2011 Kennedy Center Honorees.  I don’t want to diminish their contributions to American culture but I do think it’s time for Soapers to understand exactly WHAT soap opera has contributed to the American experience.  Tonight we discuss the SWAN Campaign, Standing With Agnes Nixon in a mission of noble merit.  We discuss the cable coupon campaign and we’ll settle the various points of view being expressed about this new wave of “Pay as you view” nonsense being promoted on the Internet. So, start the New Year by experiencing a “new attitude”.  I’ve made a New Year’s Resolution and at the top of the list -- I’m taking no prisoners!   Join the chat, call in or just take a listen. We decide next year will be “the year” and by January 7 that list of resolutions falls by the wayside.   Sometimes all it takes is a little behavior modification.  This year has been a rollercoaster ride of modifications for soap opera fans on all three networks.  As 2011 comes to an end there’s a new hope amidst the chaos within the industry. Tonight we’ll discuss a resolution I would like to make concerning the soap media.  In this new Information Age the term incorporates several media: print, video, commercial soap sites, bloggers and podcasts.  How can we find a way to bridge the gaps between our own?  For most of us it’s been a contentious year with firestorms hurling from every point on the compass.  What can we do in the soap fan community to change the dynamic?   And what can I do as a so-called member of the media?  I’m going to lay out a few things which happened in the last week to cause me to want to have this discussion. Unbeknownst to us when we planned this show was that dynamics would be changing rapidly. So before we get down to business with the November Soapy Coupon Sweep, we're going to discuss some disturbing rumors which surfaced today behind the scenes from the most unlikeliest places. For weeks, GH fans have been led to believe November sweeps were critical to the show. Anne Sweeney and Brian Frons have had the cast & crew of GH working in overdrive to promote the show and encourage viewership. Well, from what we hear there was supposed to be great soap drama playing out for the sweeps. While hope remains for a sudsy GH November, there's more at stake than we realize.   For Disney Daytime fans this has been a rough year but our focus and diligence have paid off to a certain extant. Tonight I'm going to drop a bomb for a change. While I've never been a fan of rumors and have purposely stayed away, the speculation which came my way today has caused me to pause and look at the big picture. So tonight I'll be throwing it out on the table – what I heard, insider speculation as to what is really going on at Disney and more. Here will be tough talk. There will be very little room for compromise. Well, tonight we're going to discuss the party and the message brought out by Becky Herbst to her fans. It was an amazing show and what's most important is it celebrated the leadership and focus of General Kimmie with the BeckyNation movement. In the meantime there are other things brewing on the horizon. What's in store for GH as we head into November sweeps? And how do we send a message to Anne Sweeney that she needs to have a level playing field in determining the “best two shows”. Tonight we explore the duplicity of Disney. We've got an idea! Let GH go to a network which can capitalize on what remains! We're also going to discuss the slams I've received for referring to Disney as “Mauschwitz”. Those who subtly call me an “anti-Semite” better get ready. I'm not going to take that kind of stuff sitting down. One of the things frustrating me and many in the soap movement is the role the “official” soap press and the commercial soap bloggers have had in trying to diminish the impact of the soap fan movement. Tonight we're going to attack the issue head on. We're going to discuss the whens, whys and wherefores of the soap's Fourth Estate and how they may as well be on a Kamikaze mission if they don't change their tactics. Let's compare notes! So, join the chat or call in. GET INVOLVED! YOU have a voice and we encourage you to use it! And, as usual, our doors are open to anyone in the soap media (online or in print) to come on board and discuss the issues in a sane, respectful manner. The soap fan wars have reached a point where many are concerned that the movement is about to implode. Keeping that in mind tonight we will discuss what all soap fan groups need to remember – we share a common goal. As the clock ticks down to the Disney Daytime announcement of the future of General Hospital the fans of the show must come together and understand what is at stake here. We're going to cut through the chase. For months I've tried mu utmost to be up front and call them like I see them. At times I've been over the top but at no time have I ever lost sight of my one goal and that is bringing life back to a dying genre. What most of the GH fan base fails to realize is the contentious fan wars only help Disney take down this show. Soap fans are smarter than that! Then we're going to discuss the Days reboot and what the Cordays are doing right! It has been an amazing 12 episodes since the reinvention of Days of Our Lives and for most this return to Salem has been just what the doctor ordered! The Head Writers of Days get it. They know what makes good soap opera and for those who have not tuned in, we're here to tell you there are thousands of Days fans online who will help you through the transition so you can learn about the characters and the rich legacy which remains virtually intact! Last, but certainly not least, we'll discuss the cable coupon campaign and how important it is that we get those coupons in! Since the Prospect Park announcement we've seen a decrease in the returns.  And we have answers for the "critics". So, join the chat, call in and get involved! Tonight I will be addressing the comments – both positive and negative. I've been very hesitant in giving any reaction to anyone's opinion as I struggled myself to see all points of view.  Tonight I'll discuss the feedback and issue my own words on where I stand. While profane at times and somewhat over the top at others, Monday night's show was provocative beyond words. Many issues were thrown on the table of debate. And that's what this soap movement needs! It's time to air our dirty laundry and deal with the consequences. So, with that in mind, this is my outline of tonight’s show: Monday night's show – placing everything in proper perspective and reminding everyone that the open door for dialog has always been present. My Megan Ward piece and the vicious attacks in its aftermath. What people fail to read into my comments. The lessons of Days of Our Lives Reboot – what interacting with the DOOL cast & crew have taught me about Disney culture and ABC Daytime fans. Why the Coupon Campaign has not been and will not be an “epic fail” and why certain people have refused to embrace it. It's obvious it's not about the genre for them as it is for us. How the soap media/blogosphere wars have more in common with soap fans wars than not. Why does the soap media/blogosphere fail to realize that I have consistently looked at them as being an integral part of reinventing soap opera. And with our friend and ally RavenBeauty facing her own battle with this dreaded disease, it made the appeal to all women to think of themselves most poignant. We discussed the recent P&G announcement concerning the agreement reached with Broadway Video Distribution concerning ATWT, AW, Gl, SFT and EON. Without the rising voices of the soap opera movement we believe this step forward may never have happened. Then we entered into a lively discussion with soap journalist Nelson Branco. Mr. Branco, armed with a cadre of 20 million readers through all his journalistic endeavors, has launched the new Soap Opera: Uncensored, an online magazine filled with the content we've come to appreciate from his years at Suds Report. Unfortunately, things in the soap media world have become as volatile as American politics lately. The discussion at times is profane, humorous and sometimes a bit contentious. But as with all things Nelson Branco, we are never robbed of honest, robust commentary! CAUTION: This episode contains profanity. Any guest or caller is entitled to express their individual opinion. That's what an open forum is all about. If anyone has taken offense, we apologize. Insofar as comments made by Nelson with regard to Daytime Confidential or Soaps in Depth Magazines, we have always held out the welcome mat for them to appear on our show. Next on the agenda is the ABC release of The Chew’s first ratings.  ABC/Disney had a field day spinning the ratings with comparisons and more.  But just what did those ratings really mean?  How many markets were actually measured?  And what feacts did Disney’s PR people leave OUT of the release which advertisers should be aware?  On this night of a PR theme, we’ll discuss the spin of spin and get into what soap fans can do in gaining better control of our own PR. We’d like to believe that Yes, in fact, soap fans HAVE made a major impact.  The soap media never thought the movement would come this far.  The advertisers are amazed the movement made it to the front page of the Wall Street Journal.  Supermarket tabloid, the GLOBE, under the leadership of Publisher Jeff Rodack has embraced the movement and printed our cable coupon campaign materials for several weeks.  Meanwhile the two Soaps in Depth Magazines showed their support to readers and soap fans by running the coupons in each issue in July.  Richard Simms stepped up to the plate and delivered – and for that we are grateful! So, what now? We’re coming into the last month of the Cable Coupon Campaign as we spread the word to soap fans on college campuses all across America! But we’re not stopping there!  Tonight is about achievement and the possibilities for the future!  We’re going to end the 2011 Summer Season on a high note and discus what we have planned for September in terms of the show, future guests and what DOOL, GH, YR and BB fans should be concerned about as the new Fall Season goes into gear.  There’s plenty to “chew” on tonight and the “revolution” which has taken hold is continually growing.  That’s our “view”.  So come start the weekend with us.  Call in, join the chat, and give us your take.  Let’s end the summer with a BANG! 02:04:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,ATWT GL DOOL BB YR AMC OLTL GH,The Nonmagic of Disney,Neilsen Ratings and the lies of Madison Avenue, scripted television programmingIt’s the eve of Labor Day Weekend, 2011.  The studios of All My Children have gone dark – “temporarily”.  So what have we accomplished this summer?  Did soap fTaking stock and holding ithttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/08/31/taking-stock-and-holding-itTelevisionhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/08/31/taking-stock-and-holding-it/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/08/31/taking-stock-and-holding-itWed, 31 Aug 2011 02:00:00 GMTTaking stock and holding it OK, here’s the deal. One doesn’t necessarily have to own Disney stock to have been directly affected by Disney business.  Disney is everywhere these days – whether it’s with the deliberate destruction of the ABC brand or watching your favorite sports on ESPN.  When you’ve got kids you inevitably end up taking them to Disneyland or Disneyworld.  A home your kids are watching the Disney cable channels because parents are under the mistaken impression that all Disney children’s programming is wholesome and represents true American “family values”.  Yeah, that’s the lazy way out, folks. Too many parents are using Disney programming as an alternative to babysitters and proactive parenting.  I know. I’ll make a few people mad, but PROVE me wrong! We are soap opera fans.  And we’ve hidden in shame too long.  We get the big picture.  We understand all of the elements which create compelling, quality scripted programming.  For over half a century our voices have been muffled, ignored and disregarded by Madison Avenue Advertising moguls and a Neilsen ratings system which favor the “haves” over the “have nots”.  There it is, pure and simple.  Our entire entertainment structure is a reflection of our politics.  Soap fans, this is our time.  The Lucinda Walshes, Mac Corys, Kay Chancellors, Mona Kanes, Phoebe Tyler Wallingfords, Lila Quartermaines, Tom Hortons and Victoria Lords need to come out from behind the soap fan closet doors!  Tonight we discuss the College Coupon Campaign which kicks off Labor Day!  We’ll discuss how far we have come this summer and what we are going to do to make EVERY network take notice as we enter the new Fall Season!  Join the chat, call in – get involved! 01:33:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,ATWT OLTL AMC GH GL AW BB YR DOOL,The Non-magic of Disney,Sexism Ageism Cronyism, entertainment gossipOK, here’s the deal. For years we've had soap pundits like Raven Beauty tell us what the real deal was.  Instead of heeding warnings, we looked away hoping against hope that it was all smoke and mirrors.  When Nelson Branco tried to be honest with soap fans, we all saw how that took a nasty turn for the worse.  So here's my question:Instead of worrying about the soap ratings, why don't we rate the soap fans?  For all t The fire and brimstone we see online, especially on Facebook, one stark reality emerges.  Most people who make trouble do it because they are so envious and insecure in their own right they have no desire to be team players they just want the glory and attention. Well, how's this? Take it? I'm sick of the games, the whining and the backstabbing. Tonight we're going to throw it all out there. TV ratings and the lies we hear.  Soap fans and which fans should rate their own performance. And we're going to talk alternative broadcasting. It's a two hour show. The Soaps Coupon Campaign is well underway as soap fans go out into the streets spreading the word about the coordinated effort between many soap groups!  It's been a little over two weeks since the campaign started and we have broken our first benchmark of 1,000 coupons! And all of these coupons have been from our Internet campaign!  Now the coupons are in The Globe magazine and reports from around the country are pouring in that many magazine racks have sold out! That's a testament to the resolve of soap fans to show support to those who support our cause and passion! Tonight we will discuss the upcoming coupons appearing in the two Soaps in Depth publications.  And regardless of how you may feel, a small gesture of appreciation goes a long way if you pick up the copy which has our coupon!  It's all about team work! It's about showing that when we make a promise, we keep it.  As I've stated many times in the last few weeks, the actual soap viewer base which uses the Internet is less than 5% of total viewers!   Tonight we exchange ideas on how we can move out from this web based campaign.  With the Globe, the two SiD issues and other venues, we're getting our story out there! Out in the trenches there are personal stories to be told by other soap fans.  We want to know what they think.  We want to hear from educators, bankers, medical professionals, stock brokers and everyone else who is a soap fan but has been afraid to come out.  We're cleaning up our image!  We're proving to Corporate America and to the Networks that the stereotypical soap fans does not exist! It's a new time and a new message.  And, to be honest, Corporate America is starting to take notice!  So, please! Join us tonight for the next step in our summer long campaign! GENRE – We all know the soap genre is in trouble.  Soap fans have a stereotypical image which we are trying to overcome.  But underneath the surface is a major problem.  How do soap fans save a genre which doesn’t seem to want to save itself?  It’s a tall order but tonight we are letting it all out.  We’re going to discuss what we are hearing behind the scenes: the fear of retribution, the uncertainty and why soap actors themselves feel they can’t come out to support themselves.  Those actors in the soap industry have to recognize while they’re almost too timid to have their own backs, the millions of fans in the market do, in fact, have theirs!  So, let’s send a message to them now – A genre worth saving begins with a genre willing to save itself! COUPONS - Tonight we discuss how the coupon campaign is proceeding and what we need to do as a “fan” base to get the word out in creative ways.  We’re going to discuss very creative approaches to groups of people you would never imagine actually enjoy soap operas.  This coupon campaign is crucial to the success of a movement which has never been so vigorous in the half century saga of soap opera. MEDIA – Of course the soap media is skeptical.  They’ve seen it all before.  But even the soap media has to admit this time the dynamics are far different.  We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to the shows we’ve done and that’s thanks to each of you who recognize the intrinsic value of quality scripted daytime serial programming – SOAP OPERA!  While we’re trying to save the jobs of soap industry people, we’re also working to save the jobs of those in the soap media! Tonight we will talk about the committees we have in place and how you can help by joining.  We have lots of work to do over the next 9 weeks as we make the summer of 2011 THE SUMMER OF SOAPS!   And we’re going to discuss how we can take the disaster that was this year’s Daytime Emmys and make it work to our advantage!  In doing so, I’m going to help you connect some of those dots I always allude to!  If you REALLY believe in the soap genre, we need your help! Time is running out and we have many things coming up which could make the difference! We’ll discuss the various fan groups working together and what our common message is going forwar including the protests which took place across the nation and what we need to do going forward to insure our message is heard.  And lastly, we will discuss the toxicity of Facebook and what we can do to encourage reason and maturity as opposed to some of the petty nonsense which takes us away from our mission.  You'll be surprised as to why some people are deliberately creating havoc in an effort to thwart the cause.   As usual, our shows are a journey together and they all go by so fast! And speaking of Mr. Frons, have you caught the Tweet fever overcoming General Hospital actors?  All of a sudden they’re coming out of the woodwork getting the viewers all excited!  Look up “bait & switch” on Google.  These poor actors are so afraid their respective careers are coming to an end that they’ll do anything to make the boss happy.  And the pathetic thing about it is the networks believe the “fans” are so desperate they can capitalize on actor fears and force them to promote a show that is D-E-A-D.  It’s emotional blackmail.   It’s time to stare Frons and his superiors straight in the eyes with one message, “This is not personal, THIS is business.”  It’s time the soap viewer base got all Michael Corleone on the networks! 01:33:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,American culture, entertainment,ATWT GL AW OLTL AMC GH YR BB,empowerment and OprahThe Coordinated Cable Coupon Campaign was launched last Saturday afternoon and the results will soon be pouring in – or will they?  Tonight we discuss the coupSoap Group Leaders Roundtable: Saving A Genrehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/06/10/soap-group-leaders-roundtable-saving-a-genreTelevisionhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/06/10/soap-group-leaders-roundtable-saving-a-genre/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/06/10/soap-group-leaders-roundtable-saving-a-genreFri, 10 Jun 2011 02:00:00 GMTSoap Group Leaders Roundtable: Saving A Genre Well, we had the opening volley and now it is time to get down to the nitty gritty.  On tonight’s show we talk with Andrea from thesoaprevolution.com, our Leadership Council at Sudz.tv and any other soap group leader who wants to join in for a coordinated across the board soap viewer effort to turn the tide!  That’s right, we’re going to leave egos and agendas at the door and we are going to work together in introducing a comprehensive marketing plan which advocates the soap viewer base and the people who work in the soap industry We will discuss our multi pronged efforts including our campaign to get cable providers to respond to consumer demand for an alternative to SoapNet.  The second thing we need to do is drive home the point to ABC/Disney that we would expect that in return for all our years of viewer loyalty, they at least give another production company a chance to take any of their soaps and run with them.  The next item on tonight’s agenda will be to discuss what soap viewers can do in their local markets.  We need facts. We need figures.  We need the help of motivated viewers who “get” what we are trying to accomplish here.  We need to be focused, united and determined not to allow reality and talk programming to saturate an already oversaturated entertainment market.  And, like it or not, that means making tough decisions like declining ABC/Disney programming ND MOVIES.  With respectful response from the corporate networks comes consumer confidence in what they sell.  That’s the bottom line.  This is a consumer revolution where the consumers will stand up and create the demand the networks and Neilsen claim is not longer there.  So please join us tonight for our roundtable where the leaders from the movements come together in the spirit of compromise and accomplishment! 02:01:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,American culture, entertainment,ATWT GL AW OLTL AMC GH YR BB,empowerment and OprahWell, we had the opening volley and now it is time to get down to the nitty gritty.  On tonight’s show we talk with Andrea from thesoaprevolution.com, our LeadSoap Viewers - Stop Sitting Shiva!http://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/06/08/soap-viewers--stop-sitting-shivaTelevisionhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/06/08/soap-viewers--stop-sitting-shiva/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/silas-kain/2011/06/08/soap-viewers--stop-sitting-shivaWed, 08 Jun 2011 02:00:00 GMTSoap Viewers - Stop Sitting Shiva! And he's got plenty to say! After a 3 month hiatus Silas Kain returns tonight with deLIBERnATION.  A lot has happened in entertainment, politics and business since we last met.  We began the year promoting the web series “Fumbling thru the Pieces” and what we tried to do is show how a simple little web series is also a metaphor for every one of us.  We’re all “fumbling through the pieces” of our own lives. Tonight we’re going to discuss the latest happenings in the daytime programming.  As ABC brings All My Children and One Life to Live to an end on their network, is there hope?  Are we just spinning our wheels to keep a genre alive?  Is there a formula out there which works? How does all of this relate to the “big picture”?  We will start tonight’s show with a recap of the events on the world stage and politics.  It will be a quick review because we know the subject most of our listeners want to discuss.  But in bringing those issues to the forefront, we’re going to show that connecting those dots may very well have everything to do with the crisis facing daytime programming today. There are many items on the agenda tonight from the “fan” movements” to the actor reaction vacuum.  Just what can we read into the silence of daytime actors?  And just how “blind sided” were certain players?  What can we do as viewers and consumers to turn the tide?  One thing is clear: respect is a key issue.  Soap actors never received the parity and respect they earned from their own peers.  Soap viewers on the whole are subscribing to the notion that the majority of soap viewers are mindless lemmings who don’t have a coherent thought.  Connect the dots.  Look at the big picture. "Fumbling thru the Pieces" a new Web SeriesJulie A. Smith and Donna Hurst join me tonight to discuss their new web series "Fumbling thru the Pieces" which stars One Life to Live's Hillary B. Smith, Robert Maffia and more. About my guests: Donna Hurst was born in East St. Louis, Illinois. She grew up in the small town of Effingham, Illinois in the heart of the Midwest. Donna developed a love affair with music at a very early age. At the age of seven, she performed to a sold out theater with Buddy Rich. She performed and toured as the lead singer and bass player for the Rock N Roll Band Rare Illusion where they had successful tours all over North America for twelve years. Donna was the creator of most of the band’s original material. When the band finally split in 1988, Donna moved to California and continued playing music, writing, and recording with several major artists. Julie A. Smith was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Julie has had various jobs throughout her life that included waitressing and bartending. She also tried her hand as an actor, and was featured in "Living Out Loud," "Melrose Place, 90210" and various plays around town. She entered behind-the-scenes back in 2000 where she worked as PA for "The Norm Show," then moved to "The Drew Carey Show." After two years with "The Drew Carey Show," she went on to work as an Assistant for Gerry Cohen's shows which included, "Still Standing," "Run of the House," "Listen Up" and the "George Lopez" show. She also worked on "The Help" with Ron Leavitt, who was the creator and writer of "Married with Children." Julie feels very blessed to have worked on these shows, for all the people whom she has met, and for the memories, all of which fueled her creative mind and helped her create and write "Fumbling thru the Pieces." Donna and Julie had been friends for several years. One day Julie called and said “I have an idea… I think we’d make a good writing team. Will you take a look at my script?” 01:29:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,Creating a new show, entertainment,ATWT GL AW OLTL AMC GH YR BB,BlogcriticsJulie A. Tonight we have two friends and journalists: from the Canadian perspective with our friend columnist Mike Archer of Abbotsford Today in British Columbia; and from the Palm Beach Daily News we welcome journalist Michelle Dargan who also hosts the up and coming SoapBox1.com. These two local reporters have a keen perspective of what's happening not only in their communities but globally. What do local news media think of the monopolization of “news” by agenda driven pundits? And has the great obsession with all things sensational hampered local news reporters from going after stories that really matter? Tonight I'll ask how buying a local newspaper may help your local economy. We're going to tackle some tough issues and we'll even discuss the lighter side of local news reporting. Perhaps you've thought about being a local journalist. Maybe it's been 10 or 20 years since you've picked up your local newspaper. Tonight we'll make the case as to why you should consider doing it once again! So, grab a drink, tune in and share your thoughts. It's going to be a great show! About Michelle Dargan:: Michele Dargan has worked as a reporter and editor at newspapers in Connecticut and South Florida for more than 25 years. We've elected to step up the soap opera fight! This week we interrupt the political news on the close of Election Day with our own election results! We're a group of daytime aficionados who have banded together to come up with a unique approach to reviving and possibly saving the genre known as Daytime Television or “soap opera”. Almost since its inception, soap opera has become the fodder for jokes, disrespect and minimization. Under the illusion however, is the truth about how soap opera has affected everyday life in America on a grand scale. Tonight we discuss the remaining 6 daytime dramas: Young & the Restless, Bold & the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital. But it's not only about what remains. We believe there's a viable demand for another couple of soaps on television. We're making a compelling case for why we maintain this position and will be citing efforts in other countries to use soap opera as a vehicle to encourage societal change. We're going to discuss our Soap-posal and where it stands. We've asked for your help in putting the final package together. Tonight we will discuss what you can do to become part of a grass roots effort to bring our cause to the attention of the media and studio executives. It's bold. It's unique. It's decidedly a soap fan thing to do. While studio executives and soap media view the Internet fans base as a bunch of “whackos”, we've proven that we're not. Every day we continue to present our case and demonstrate the collective intelligence and wisdom that comes from years of viewing So join in the conversation. Share your ideas. This is a volatile time in American politics. When you add in all the other factors, one quickly realizes that the point to which we've arrived is quite logical. If you watched Sir Elton John and Leon Russell on The View this past week, you'll understand where we're coming from. There's a vacuum of creativity in our society and especially in our schools. The Atari, Commodore 64 and Legend of Zelda generation is now coming into their own. But what did they miss during their formative years that sets them apart from the older generations? We'll discuss, of all things, Dancing With the Stars and why Bristol Palin is getting a bad rap. That's right, we said it. Leave the politics and volatility out of it. Let's discuss this season of DWTS or as I call it the Season of Plump. We'll talk about the new CBS chat fest The Talk and how it may be contributing to the dumbing down of America. And, of course, we'll give you the soap opera side of things. Then we'll get into the elections and why candidates like Rand Paul, Sharon Angle and Christine O'Donnell really are great representatives for where we are at today. They seem clueless, and too extreme. Isn't that the way we are? We're pretty clueless to the political process. And, let's face it, the extremes on both sides are drowning each other pout while the rest in the middle try to muddle through and figure out where to go from here. It's a diverse agenda tonight. You'll never know the direction we will take. There's a lot to discuss. And, we're even going to hand out some endorsements in state wide races. That's right, endorsements. So, join the chat. Give us your take. The Talk, Soap Operas and Being SmartOn Episode 2 of Lathered Up, we're going to discuss the changes to daytime programming which began yesterday as the new talk show “The Talk” premiered on CBS. Sure, we're not happy about it. The show replaces 54 years of soap opera history. But we try to be fair – after all, if there's a show which will entertain while educating we want you to know about it. So, we'll start with “The Talk”. Did it live up to the hype on the first day? And, when all is said and done, we'll get right into it when it comes to talk shows. From Jerry Springer to Oprah, talk shows have become a daytime staple. Since they're, in most cases, cheaper to produce – there's a consensus building that soap operas are dying a slow death. We'll discuss why we disagree and what we're trying to do to get other soap fans involved in this new initiative. Then we;ll end the show with a discussion about the three ABC soaps – All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital. Is this whole David Hayward murder trial a bore? Are you just plain tired of Ryan and Greenlee? How do you feel about the recast of Scott Chandler wth Daniel Cosgrove? We can;'t forget what's happening in Llanview. Is Kim Zimmer cutting it as Echo DiSavoy? Are you interested in the story line and is she Rex Balsam's mother? What about the Ford Brothers? What's your take on their evolution? Of course no discussion of OLTL can be complete without the saga of Eli and Blair. What do you think of the Tea & Dani reunion. And, last but not least, there's General Hospital. What's your take on the Balkan? Still thrilled about Vanessa's reprisal of Brenda Barrett? Where do you want to see Port Charles head next. We're keeping in touch with our roots and the theme is empowerment and hope that springs from knowing “it DOES get better!” In our first Season we chatted with business people, entrepreneurs, actors, soap opera fans and individuals who are making a difference in their communities. One thing we've learned during this time is there are many folks like us across North America who really do believe that by working together, “common people” can make an incredible impact on society. Enter Jen Foster a Houston, TX native who is fulfilling her dreams as singer, song writer and artist in Nashville. Tonight we'll talk about Jen's journey of self discovery and what facilitated her to write her new song, “This Is Me” which was made available to the public earlier this week on National Coming Out Day. We'll discuss how she became involved with the web soap series “Venice” and we'll get Jen's take on music and entertainment today. There's an amazing lesson to be learned from Jen's saga as she performs in coffee houses, auditoriums and concert halls across America. After last week's 5-day Surge on Soaps Marathon there are many things which have yet to be said. Many in the soap community are quietly applauding the "failure" of the rallies and no one is happier about it than members of the "official" soap opera press. The soap viewer community is a reflection of our culture today -- it's a fragmented mess. Soap operas as they are written today are another reflection -- they are a mess as well. In the grand scheme of things the soap press says that the Daytime viewer base is insignificant and too small to affect any change. Oh really? The internet soap fan base is viewed as a "band of loonies" with no credibility whatsoever. Hmmm. I think that's how the British viewed Americans prior to the Revolution. We've heard the "tough" talk from the professionals but where the heck are the solutions? What is the soap media doing to help save a genre they claim to love so much? If you've listened to any of my shows which don't have a thing to do with soap you will find a common thread -- follow the money. Learn the connections. Connect the dots. It applies to everything - politics, consumer products, education and you got it -- soaps. According to the magazine industry itself, the big 4 soap magazines in order of rank: Soaps In Depth - CBS, Soaps in Depth - ABC, Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly have a combined average single copy circulation of 494,060 issues in 2009. They didn't even break half a million! So, let's discuss the next step in this process in how we will achieve the respect we deserve. Let's find out if the network executives, ad agencies and corporate advertisers really do believe that we are insignificant. There's something the pundits have failed to realize -- this movement is now about business. We're taking out the emotion and the self serving needs of individuals. We want all soap fans to join together. We only have one life to live as the world turns and tonight we'll discover that guiding light to lead us out of the dark shadows! Let's talk about the CBS finale. And let's celebrate soap opera! Why are we doing this? It's simple: The Save Our Soaps folks have banded together to have a rally at CBS Studios in NYC on September 20th. Other fans who can’t make it to New York have expressed interest in having simultaneous rallies at local CBS affiliates including Boston, Phoenix, Vermont and Texas! Tonight we'll catch up on the grass roots effort and share ideas on how to make Surge on Soaps Week a media story by week's end. Tonight we air at a special time - 10 PM Eastern. If you host a soap themed BlogTalkRadio Show, we want you to get involved. We've got to band together to make a point. We're all about leaving egos at the door and coming to a consensus that props up what the pundits say is a"dying genre". If you are a die hard soap fan, a soap blogger or (again) a radio host. Journalist Michele Dargan from SoapBox1.com joins me for a frank and robust discussion about ABC Soaps and the state of Daytime in general. There’s plenty to feed our chat from the cancellation of As the World Turns to the reprisal of Brenda Barrett by Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo on General Hospital. We’re going to take a novel approach tonight and discuss how soap operas have contributed to the rise of women in society. Whether it’s wife Vanessa Dale Sterling on Love of Life or the tough as nails Erica Kane on All My Children, strong, powerful female role models have made their mark! Before Sonny Corinthos or Luke and Laura made General Hospital a household word, there were others who contributed something to the national debate. One Life to Live took on interracial romance and made the news wires. Dr Althea Davis from The Doctors (the REAL one) became a role model for thousands of female medical students. And the McCandless family became the subject of political science classes across the land. When you think about it, it’s possible that the majority of Americans have been directly affected by soap opera in the smallest ways. So let’s talk about it! Stop by, tune in and get involved. There’s one way to turn the tide in Daytime, let’s do it! About Michele Dargan: Michele Dargan has worked as a journalist for more than 20 years at newspapers in Connecticut and South Florida. A staff writer at the Palm Beach Daily News, Michele covers politics, religion, courts and equestrian sports. She began watching soaps in the late 1960s with “OLTL” and segued into “AMC,” “GH” and several others over the years. Her husband and three stepchildren understand and support her soap addiction, which she has passed on to her stepdaughter, Christina, a big “One Life To Live” fan.01:01:00Silas Kainnosoap operas,American culture,ABC Daytime,Blogcritics, empowerment and OprahThis week we’ll be talking the rich history, current status and fate of the American genre known as Soap Opera. I've always been intrigued by what all the fuss was about and with Sue, we got a glimpse into discussing taboo subjects with maturity and vision. During that time I was also introduced to a new phenomenon in "Home Parties" and had the opportunity to attend a few Athena's Home Parties. I have to say I was impressed and my curiosity became stronger. Enter Jennifer Jolicouer, founder and President of Athena's Home Novelties. So, we went out on a limb and contacted Ms. Jolicouer. We wanted to learn more about the woman, the entrepreneur and most of all her vision for the women she inspires across America. After a few years in the business, Ms. Jolicouer expanded her horizons. She decided to create her own company - one that worked as a family unit with its distributors - a company based upon a distinctive sisterhood. Thus, Athena's Home Novelties was born. Athena's Home Novelties is guided by a mission: "To empower women down the path of sexual education in the safe, comfortable environment of their own homes by offering only the highest quality products presented by a trained Athena's Goddess." Today Athena's supports over 1,400 active Goddesses in 37 states. Tonight we discuss Ms. Jolicoeur, her company and her vision. What drives a bright entrepreneur to delve into the "forbidden zone"? And why is Athena's Home Novelties more than just "adult toys"? Have a question about a product, give us a call. Want to learn about empowering your life and providing a service to fellow women in your community? This show could be the launch of a new career. In a four year period, fifteen of Ron's family members and close personal friends died, including his mother, brother and sister-in-law. During the same period of time, Ron himself suffered a broken neck and severe concussion in a car accident involving a drunk driver. All of these events have strengthened his resolve to make a significant impact on the world and the people around him. So how does an individual try and make a difference in a busy world? As an entrepreneur, Ron knew he had another choice to make. He could choose to do nothing and try to live a very happy and contented life for himself. Or he could choose to make his life, and everything he does, count for something greater. He realized if someone had taken the steps years ago to fund cancer research in the same way he is proposing to do now, his sister-in-law may still be alive. He hopes that what is achieved through The World’s Greatest Treasure Hunt™, will result in a cure and prevent other families from going through the devastating effect of losing a loved one far too soon. Ron Shore is no stranger to taking chances or achieving dreams. He’s climbed Mount Kilimanjaro; received an MBA from UBC - emphasis in marketing and a master's thesis on treasure hunting; cycled across Canada and even received NASCAR training in Las Vegas. His endeavors have not gone unnoticed - in 2002 Ron received Her Majesty the Queen's Jubilee medal for outstanding service to the nation. A veteran, Benac served our country just after the war for almost 8 years during a tumultuous time for our military. Rather than place responsibility on politicians, Veterans became the scapegoats in the political debate. Though a proud Veteran, Benac found himself in an awkward position – ashamed of acknowledging his own record of service. The tide turned when Benac was first asked to help at a BBQ for Our Troops event. He jumped at the chance. When Marines being fed learned Benac was “ex-Army” they thanked HIM for his service. It wasn’t long before he realized people outside the military started doing the same thing. Being a Veteran wasn’t a bad thing anymore. Those young Marines opened Benac’s eyes. “I am no longer ‘Ex-Army’”, Benac proclaimed, “the Marines got it right - I am Former Army and proud of it!” From that first BBQ, Benac found a mission and began American Spirit BBQ – “Proudly Serving Those Who Courageously Defend Our Freedom”. Benac’s mission is clear. “American Spirit BBQ is part of a nationwide movement called Operation BBQ,” Benac said, “Our mission is to cater military homecoming and farewell events free of charge as a small way of saying thanks for a thankless job.” As the anniversary of America’s Independence approaches, Peter Benac joins me on Thursday July 1 to talk about his mission, our military and what you can do in your community to help our returning Veterans. In the meantime, we’ll also look at the lighter side of this operation. Peter and I will discuss BBQ techniques – what makes the difference between a good BBQ and a legendary experience. Keating, best known for his role of Carl Hutchins on the long running NBC daytime drama Another World has an impressive repertoire. Much to the delight of daytime audiences, Keating has had roles in other daytime staples such as As the World Turns, All My Children and Port Charles. In 1996, Keating won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of the evil turned romantic Carl Hutchins. London-born Keating is no stranger to the British stage and screen. He’s appeared in British favorites like Brideshead Revisited, BBC2 Playhouse and Crown Court. Even with his television and screen successes, Keating has never migrated far away from the stage. In 1986, he starred on Broadway in Joe Orton’s Loot and went on to receive a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor. Recently he appeared in two performances of Critics, Fans and Fanatics - a lighthearted look at the good, bad and the ugly of theater criticism with his Another World co-star Victoria Wyndham. He has acted in several local stage productions including playing Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. From Shakespeare to Irna Philips, Charles Keating has taken the writer’s words and brought them to life for millions of fans around the world. Many will remember Ms. Wyndham as Rachel Davis Cory Hutchins on the long running daytime soap Another World. Ms. Wyndham began her artwork on Another World 39 years ago as her character became an artist. She did all her own work for the character and garnered art shows and collectors from this unusual venue. Ms Wyndham's colorful abstract expressionist paintings are from a series called "Bak's Law" which was inspired by the financial meltdown (which ended her TV job but enabled her artwork) and the idea of becoming vs. entropy. We will discuss life after Another World and how by discovering your passion you can create a successful new career path! Ms. Wyndham’s passion for art has opened an entire new world of opportunities. By getting back in touch with your passions, perhaps you may learn, as we did, that there is no better time to take a chance and grow. For our friends in the Northeast, Ms. Wyndham’s art will be on display during the month of May at Artifact Art & Furniture Gallery in Wilton, CT. On May 1st, Ms. Wyndham will be joined by her former AW co-star Charles Keating (Carl Hutchins) for a performance piece titled "Critics, Fans and Fanatics" a lighthearted look at the good, bad and the ugly of theater criticism. So please join us on Thursday, April 15th as we continue our small business series with Victoria Wyndham and how her passion for art has created a whole new world for so many people. 01:00:00Silas Kainnosmall business challenges,Victoria Wyndham,Another World, acting and art, empowermentIn keeping with our theme of Small Business Month, we will be having a conversation with Victoria Wyndham. Have CNN, FOX and MSNBC become the new daytime dramas? CBS announced that after 54 years they were pulling the plug on As The World Turns. Soap fans may recall that just a few months previous, CBS canceled Guiding Light after 60+ years. Both shows were owned by Proctor & Gamble the maker of household products from Tide to Duracell. In the early days of radio and television the daytime serial (soap opera) helped introduce American women to their product lines. Many P&G brands are have been used by several generations who watched their "stories". So after generations of loyal viewership, the shrinking numbers and competitive quest for ratings gold have left soap operas in the dust. ABC just moved their All My Children cast to Los Angeles from New York City. The acting community is rapidly losing a source for ppracticing their craft. In the meantime, others say that soap operas have contributed to the "dumbing" of America. What's your take? Is it a big loss? Or did soap companies bait the hook and not care about fan loyalty. All this and more on the March 25th episode of Silas Kain's deLIBERnATION. So join me and my guests for a discussion about the rise and fall of an American institution and what As The World Fans are doing to campaign to save their show.
