Take for example the concept of community-generated electric power. Officially called Community Choice Aggregaton (CCA), it allows cities or counties to replace a large portion of the electrical power they've been getting from the mega-monopoly utility, produce it themselves from clean renewable sources, and get paid for it by the utility's rate payers in the communities that choose to go with it. Renewable sources are exactly what the name implies- wind, solar, geothermal, and whatever new technologies make use of the heat or motion of earth and sky, to generate power without mining the earth, without throwing off radiation or CO2. When Sonoma Clean Power (SCP) was approved in April 2013, it became the latest community choice power initiative on the California scene, with several more already in the works. Supervisors approved it for the unincorporated part of Sonoma County (north of San Francisco). Cities also have the option to take part in the program. What the local governments like about SCP is the local jobs likely to be created in in assembling large scale solar-electric generating capacity, and the revenue from electric bills that will stay in the local economy rather than trickling up to Wall Street (more than $220 million per year, currently paid to PG&E by Sonoma County ratepayers). In this 30-minute interview, ShiftShapers host Daniel Kerbein talks to Woody Hastings, Renewable Energy Implementation Manager at the Climate Protection Campaign, located in Sonoma County. He has been an outspoken advocate and spokesperson for community-generated electricity, and in particular, Sonoma Clean Power. The conversation provides an overview of what Sonoma Clean Power is, and how it will work as it goes forward and is implemented. 00:32:00Shift Shapersnorenewable power, community choice,Sonoma Clean Power, climate protection,Sonoma CountySome no-brainers take a while to find their place in the public mind. In this 38-minute interview, Gayle McLaughlin, Mayor of Richmond, CA tells us that the key is staying in touch with the energy and spirit of the people, who see a clean food and green energy future for themselves, which includes a liveable city where people have empowered employment through worker-owned cooperatives. On August 6, more than 900 people have sought medical treatment following a massive fire at the Chevron oil refinery which sits at the western edge of Richmond. Tens of thousands of area residents were ordered to stay in their homes with the windows and doors closed after a series of blasts Monday sparked blazing fires that sent huge plumes of smoke. Mayor McLaughlin called for a full investigation into the blaze, and told Amy Goodman on Democracy Now,  "We have a community that’s been fighting Chevron for a long time. And I’m proud to and honored to stand for that community." The investigation so far has turned up an illegal rerouting of dirty crude oil as the possible cause of the fire. Environmental justice groups such as Communities for a Better Environment have previously sued Chevron over poorly drawn environmental impact reports. Issues are simmering over Chevron's environmental practices, but also fair txation and the corporate giant's refusal to negotiate in good faith with the community over a wide range of issues. Meanwhile, progressives on the city council are joining the Mayor to reinvent Richmond with Community Gardens, farmers markets, school projects, an active Transition Town movement, and a policy that favors the formation of worker-owned cooperative businesses. Listen in, to find out how a truth-to-power mayor and city council have stopped rolling over for Chevron - and started revitalizing Richmond. 00:41:00Shift ShapersnoRichmond California,Gayle McLaughlin,Chevron Richmond,Refinery fires, progressive mayorHow does a city crawl out from under the black-smoked shadow of a refinery that has dominated its western edge for over 100 years? Language Intelligence: Lessons in Persuasion from Jesus, Shakespeare, Lincoln, and Lady Gaga has already garnered rave reviews from the environmental community. Van Jones calls it  "the new must-read." Bill McKibben says, when it comes to the techniques of great speakers, "Romm’s simple volume will let anyone in on the secrets." Dr. Romm is Senior Fellow of the Center for American Progress, manager of the blog Climate Progress, and former U.S. Asst. Secretary of Energy. In this 28-min. interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, Dr. Romm shares some principles from Language Intelligence, and reminds us of how serious our raging climate has become. Industry hacks use simple figures of speech to deny science. We can top them by learning from great orators and writers. If we want to reclaim a planetary habitat we can live in, we need to stop giving away the debate to the climate kindergarteners. Give them a time-out, once and for all. The U.S. Army has thrown fellow whistle-blower Bradley Manning into solitary confinement and attorney Michael Ratner fears the U.S. State Dept. wants to grab Assange as well. After escapes worthy of a spy novel, Assange found asylum in London, at the Ecuadoran embassy. In this 35-minute interview, host Daniel Kerbein talks to Michael Ratner, defense attorney for Julian Assange and the Guantanamo prisoners. It has been a dangerous time for Assange, who actually sought asylum to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning on another matter. Although no charges have been filed,  two women there have accused Assange of rape. Hence the fear of an extradition to the U.S., since Sweden has not promised to prevent the U.S. from nabbing him over the Wikileaks matter. Ratner - along with the president of Ecuador - is certain that the ultimate motive behind the extraditions is to punish Assange for whistle blowing.  Mr. Ratner has been outspoken in defending the rights of Assange, and the media that have used Wikileaks information to cast light on U.S. foreign intrigues. He appears often on Democracy Now!, and hosts the weekly program "Law and Disorder" on Pacifica station WBAI in New York. Mr. Ratner works through the Center for Constitutional Rights, defending detainees in Guantanamo, appealing for the rights of people who have endured years of torture without any criminal charges. He has also, for decades, taken a lead in appealing to the US Government to lift its embargo on Cuba, and recently wrote a book exploring who killed Che Guevara.. 00:35:00Shift ShapersnoJulian Assange,Wikileaks,Ecuadoran Embassy,Bradley Manning,Michael RatnerAn attorney's work does not get more complex or high-profile than this: His client, Julian Assange, set up a whistle-blowing web site called WikiLeaks, obtaineAndres Perez, Eyewitness- Anaheim Police Actions Just Wronghttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/08/20/andres-perez-eyewitness-anaheim-police-actions-just-wrongPolitics Progressivehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/08/20/andres-perez-eyewitness-anaheim-police-actions-just-wrong/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/08/20/andres-perez-eyewitness-anaheim-police-actions-just-wrongMon, 20 Aug 2012 09:00:00 GMTAndres Perez, Eyewitness- Anaheim Police Actions Just Wrong On July 21, police shot and killed 25-year old Manuel Diaz in Anaheim, CA. The killing sparked days of protests and received widespread media attention. Diaz was unarmed and was the eighth Anaheim Police shooting in a year.  Only one is still alive to tell the story of being shot twice in the back. Most of those shot have been Latino. Media stories about the police attack sometimes included references to "an unruly crowd", "throwing rocks and bottles." Andres Perez was there. He saw it and has video, and he says the tale about throwing things at the cops is "a big lie". Here is a link to a video he made right afterward (parental advisory re language). In this 30-minute interview, Mr. Perez describes what happened in Anaheim shortly after police shot and killed Manuel Diaz, in broad daylight, on the front lawn of an apartment house. As Manuel Diaz bled out on the lawn, the neighbors on Ana Drive did what anyone would do under the circumstances: they gathered and demanded to know what had happened. They in turn received a dose of Anaheim PD firepower: rubber bullets, pepper spray, bean bag projectiles, and even an attack dog -  all of it unleashed upon an assemblage that included children and infants. Most media accounts have left out the disturbing connection that more unarmed civilians are killed by police in the U.S. every year. This interview first aired on bilingual KBBF-FM 89.1, Calistoga-Santa Rosa, CA. The interview is bilingual, English-Spanish, and the Spanish version will soon be added to this podcast. Most reports left out one disturbing connection: America's list of unarmed civilians killed by police has grown steadily over the past several years. Manuel Diaz was unarmed and was the eighth Anaheim Police shooting in a year.  Only one of the mostly Latino men is still alive to tell the story of being shot twice in the back. The Diaz shooting incident escalated when neighbors, who had gathered at the scene to demand an end to the violence, were shot with rubber bullets by officers who also released an attack dog on an unarmed assembly that included children. Titania Kuhme authored the report, "When Police Shoot and Kill Unarmed Men", in 2010 in Mother Jones Magazine. Since that time the number of unarmed police victims has escalated. Ms. Kumeh is a former Orange County resident now living in Oakland. What's causing this trend? What can be done? In this 32-min. interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, Titania Kuhme explores the recommendations of police experts and study groups. At the root of the violence, she observes, is "culture of fear", with police seeking to instill fear in minority neighborhoods, creating an us-vs.-them war rather than community engagement. All the previous speakers in our New Economy series have mentioned the example of the thriving, worker-owned Mondragon cooperatives. In this 32-minute interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, Georgia Kelly, founder of Praxis Peace Institute,  describes the experience of having visited Mondragon, Spain and even having led several tours there in recent years. She says the lessons to be learned from studying the Mondragon model of cooperative industry are many, and even more impressive than that is to see how people live in a large community with no poverty or unemployment, no rapacious corporate CEOs to skim their fortune from the profits or send the business offshore. Far from it. In the more than 100 businesses in Mondragon, over 100,000 workers own the businesses where they work, and own their jobs. And they are prospering. At a time when the only mainstream news out of spain is about debt, an economic crash, and cruel austerity measures put into place to protect bank profits. Americans have to see it to believe it. No, you won't see it on TV, you have to turn that thing off and talk to someone who's been there, or go see it yourself. That opportunity is coming up. The next study tour will go from Sept. 9-12, 2012. (Go to www.praxispeace.org for details.) People who take this tour, come back and start new worker co-ops, or continue spreading the word. "I don't see a bright future for capitalism," Georgia Kelly observes. Anyone who says single-payer medical care or the Social Security system are examples of socialism, "doesn't know what they're talking about," asserts Carl Davidson. The real thing happens when workers take ownership of their jobs and the companies where they work. Mr. Davidson has some credibility in the area of socialist thinking. He started the Online University of the Left , a curriculum-rich resource for the study of socialism and the ideas of Karl Marx. During the 60's, while attending an ivy-covered university, he was a co-founder of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). We can see examples of worker ownership in the Arizmendi Bakeries in California (listen to our ShiftShapers interview with Alvarado Street Bakery); the Evergreen Cooperatives in Cleveland, OH; and the grand-daddy of them all, Mondragon Spain  - an entire region, with over 100 co-ops employing more than 100,000 worker-owners. In this 34-minute interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, Mr. Davidson points out that while hundreds more Mondragons would be a huge benefit to the workers involved, true socialism is the liberation of the working class and the achievement of a classless society. Meanwhile, the existing co-ops are a school for their workers: If we can run our factory, why not our town? If we can run our town, how about our whole country?     00:34:00Shift ShapersnoMondragon,Solidarity Economy,Socialism,Carl Davidson,Worker Co-opsThis is the 3rd interview in our ShiftShapers series about the New Economy. You might even say it's against the grain. In the entire United States, the Bank of North Dakota is the most shining example of this kind of bank. And it is against the grain. What is the management doing right, that allows this bank ot function so well? It's as simple as this: The Bank of North Dakota, rather than a Wall Street bank, is a state-owned bank. it's publicly owned. That enables state government to borrow money for public projects without having to pay interest or fees, resulting in more public projects and more economic health. The success of this bank during widespread hard times, when private corporate banks continue to tighten their lending, has financially-minded people in other states exploring ways to start up their own state and county banks. In this 30-minute interview with ShiftShaper host Daniel Kerbein, Marc Armstrong of the Public Banking Institute explains the advantages to communities when their state or county deposits money in its own bank. For one think, the state or county doesn't have to pay interest on the money it borrows from itself. This saves billions - either ritght away, or over the long term. Local public banks can also target specific areas of local development, thus providing even more financial benefit to the community. 00:30:00Shift ShapersnoPublic Banking,Marc Armstrong,County Banks,State Banks,New EconomyThis is Part 2 of our ShiftShapers series on the New Economy These days if a bank is stable, hasn't been bailed out and is actively lending money to stimulateNoel Ortega- Keep Money on Main St., Not Wall Streethttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/08/14/noel-ortega-keep-money-on-main-st-not-wall-streetFinancehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/08/14/noel-ortega-keep-money-on-main-st-not-wall-street/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/08/14/noel-ortega-keep-money-on-main-st-not-wall-streetTue, 14 Aug 2012 19:00:00 GMTNoel Ortega- Keep Money on Main St., Not Wall Street It's more than a recession, worse than stagnation or even depression. Deal with it. Corporations are non-human and non-living. Like a mythic character who has made a deal with the devil, a corporation can live forever and kill with impunity, without being executed or imprisoned.  Many are richer than nations, commanding policies, elections, even assassinations in smaller nations. Worse, recent court decisions give these behemoths even more rights than people. They're now "persons", entitled to rights of free "speech" which in the twisted parlance of the U.S. Supreme Court means they may spend unlimited billions, on any political campaign they wish to influence, and keep it a secret. Strange since a corporate charter's purpose is to be only a shield for real humans, from liability. When lawsuits hit the fan, a corporation is just a pile of legal papers trotted into court. At no time is it ever a person. Corporate scandals? Toxic spills and death? Wow, tough break. Jobs going offshore? Too bad. Hand over the subsidies, schedule the next bailout, and be quiet. Corporations now own American politics. How did they get so much power? Can it be dismantled?  In this interview with ShiftShapers co-host Daniel Kerbein, Ted Nace, author of Gangs of America: The Rise of Corporate Power and the Disabling of Democracy, probes the roots of corporate power. That group of privileged men we revere as the Founding Fathers despised corporations. The Virginia Company killed thousands of women and children through ill-treatment on forced-labor tobacco plantations. The East India Company attempted to monopolize American goods, resulting in the merchant-led rebellion known as the Boston Tea Party. Us!http://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/06/24/pamm-larry-put-gmos-on-the-label-stop-experimenting-on-usFoodhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/06/24/pamm-larry-put-gmos-on-the-label-stop-experimenting-on-us/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/06/24/pamm-larry-put-gmos-on-the-label-stop-experimenting-on-usSun, 24 Jun 2012 19:00:00 GMTPamm Larry- Put GMOS on Labels & Stop Experimenting on Us! Pamm Larry likes being able to look at the label of a food product and find out what’s inside before she buys it – sugars, fats, and all other things organic and artificial, you can find it on the label, right? Wrong. One class of food manufacturers gets to hide its product from public view, and hence from consumer choice: the manufacturers of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Ever seen BT Corn on a food label, or Round-Up Ready Canola? After this November, perhaps you will. Pamm Larry got tired of having  California food labels conceal untested food ingredients, so she got busy, formed Label GMOs and launched the GMO Labeling Initiative for the November California ballot. Last month, Label GMO gathered nearly a million signatures, twice as many as were required to make the ballot.  During the second half hour of this 1-hour program, co-host Daniel Kerbein interviews Pamm Larry about the origins and objectives of the Caifornia Right to Know ballot initiative. In preparation for that interview, Daniel explores the process and the potential dangers posed by genetic modification of our food supply, and the implications of releasing these organisms onto gigantic farm fields and of course into our food supply. - without any testing for potential harm to the environment, or ill effects on humans. To this purpose, he uses excerpts from Mike Adams' Health Ranger reports, and Jeffery Smith's "GMO Threat" video series. This program first aired on bilingual KBBF-FM 89.1 Calistoga/Santa Rosa. In 1970, the young Brazilian student spoke out against the injustice. He knew the dangers; he was arrested, imprisoned and tortured. His mother, Lina Penna Sattamini, managed to locate him and after a year's effort, got him released and got him out of the country, to live a 10-year period of exile until a democratically-elected regime took power in Brazil. Arruda went on to become an economist and popular educator.  He has worked closely with Brazilian labor, co-operatives and solidarity economy movements for years.  He is active in the Ecovillage and Transition Town movements, also active in the Jubilee South Network -  addressing issues related to the debt crisis and alternatives, economy and ecology. In this one-hour podcast (originally aired over KBBF-FM 89.1 Calistoga/Santa Rosa California), Marcos Arruda shares with Shift-Shapers co-host Daniel Kerbein his views on the world economy and human development. He sees the debt crisis as an opportunity to restructure the world economy, so that economic development serves human and social development, not the model of the global economy – which is the reverse. The global economy, based on the myth of "infinite" growth and resource exploitation, has come up against serious limits. New forms of development which put people at the center, rather than profit, need to be addressed. "They have the money," he says, "but we have people, and the people are a tremendous source of power." Underneath a veneer of "prosperity" the majority of the world's population lives in conditions of permanent insecurity or crisis. Community development organizations and micro-financing of Eco Villages, show new models where people thrive. About the things we're doing to our living habitat on Earth. By the way, "habitat" doesn't mean "mall." Doesn't mean WalMart either  And that big screen TV? That's not it, the stuff on it isn't even real. Our living habitat comprises all the things that industrial civilization does not value: the air we breathe, our oceans, the dirt under our feet. If it can't be mined or made into a dumping ground, it's useless. Even the people living here are only useful as consumers. In this 32-minute interview, Guy McPherson shares with Co-Host Daniel Kerbein his view that industrial civilization is destroying everything so quickly, that that if we don't stop it in the next few years, we are quickly headed for an uninhabitable planet. Dr. McPherson came around to this while a tenured professor of Environmental Science at the U. of Arizona. He couldn't reconcile his position of privilege with his realization that a collapse is mandatory for humanity's continued survival. So, he says, he "walked away from Empire." Now he lives with a group of like-minded people, producing what he calls "the Big Four- healthy food, clean water, body temperature maintenance (clothing & dwellings), and a decent human community." He also volunteers his time teaching others how to walk away. This walking away, by McPherson and others, is the subject of the upcoming film "Somewhere in New Mexico, Before the End of Time.", by Mike Sosebee. Somewhere in New Mexico is a community living off the grid, people working together, and meeting each other's needs. Somewhere in New Mexico, Before the End of Time is a documentary film by Mike Sosebee, about Prof. Guy McPherson's path, from a prestigious university, to the nitty-gritty world of permaculture and water capture. Dr. McPherson believes industrial civilization is destroying our human habitat, and must end. Global leadeers won't give us leadership, only antagonism. it is up to us as individuals, he says, to walk away from empire -start new lives, without our gadgets of destruction. To Mike Sosebee, it's a vital message. "We're sleepwalking into the end of the world," he tells co-host Daniel Kerbein in this 38-minute interview. "And that really scares me." In the film, he shows people who have carved out new lives, off the grid and into homemade food security. For Sosebee, the story isn't just about an academic who went back to the land. It's also about the censorship brought down on an educator / scientist when he told the world what he saw. Mike Sosebee is a decorated veteran, former air traffic controller. He's brought viewers up close to blues musicians and chronicled the lives of the homeless in San Diego County. In the 1930s, he was influenced by the great designer Buckminster Fuller. Starting with World War II, Fresco witnessed a devastating parade of environmental and human destruction. He saw the need to design new cities, a new economy, and a new culture. This work, spanning several decades, evolved into the Venus Project --a foundation that represents the vision of a future without poverty, crime, war, corruption, or waste. Fresco and his colleague, Roxanne Meadows, see it as a way  to outgrow current political and business notions of human affairs, using a caring and holistic approach, a world withou money, where technology serves all human needs. A more appropriate value system would need to be required to enable this  This alternative surpasses the need for the controlled and scarcity-oriented environment in which we find ourselves in today. In this 38-minute interview with Co-host Daniel Kerbein, Fresco and Meadows outline their view of a future that is ready for us to live, as soon as we are ready for it. Others think you're a negative buzz-kill, in need of some positive thinking, but not on their time. Enter the Peak Oil Shrink. Kathy McMahon, a clinical psychologist, says that dealing with the anxiety that our civilization has hit a wall and will not recover, is is an essential experience to have. Bearing isolation and rejection from loved ones and family members over those anxieties can be depressing, but does not mean you're mentally ill. She's not only been through those changes herself, she's turned her practice largely over to coaching and providing therapy for people who are experiencing the triple whammy of anxiety, panic, and rejection because of their view of the furure. She's recently completed an e-book, “I Can’t Believe You Actually Think That!” - A Couple’s Guide to Finding Common Ground about Peak Oil, Climate Catastrophe, and Economic Hard Times. She has also set up a web site, peakoilblues.org, which offers ideas and coaching around those issues and how to prepare emotionally for sudden shifts or even complete collapse. In this 30-min. interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, McMahon gives some basic advice fon preparing for the future: Have enjoyable get-togethers with the neighbors, build trust & problem solve with them. Do the same with immediate family. Become "patch o' ground" people, going "radically local" and paying very close attention to the world within a 10-mile radius of our homes, which would be our whole world in a collapse of the global economy. In this 28-minute interview, ShiftShapers Pole Reversal Radio co-host Daniel Kerbein interviews Medea Benjamin, founder of Code Pink and Global Exchange, about her new book Drone Warfare – Killing by Remote Control. Nobody speaks truth to power like Medea Benjamin. She is tireless, courageous and well-versed on the subject of unmanned robotic aircraft. Drones come in all sizes, but are used by the military for only 2 purposes: spying and killing specified targets. They have a track record of killing many more innocent civilians than terrorist-identified agents. Now they are being issued to the Border Patrol, and individual police departments. Barbara Ehrenreich notes in the Foreword to the book that drone technology has proliferated to over 50 countries. “Drone Warfare sketches out the nightmare possibilities posed by this insane proliferation. We cannot only expect drones to fall into the hands of “rogue” nations or terrorist groups; we should brace ourselves, too, for the domestic use of surveillance drones and even armed drones at the Mexican border and possibly against American civilian protestors.” Codepink has created a web site called droneswatch.org where people can obtain the latest information and campaign ideas for taking widespread action. Code Pink also co-hosted a Drone Summit in April 2012, which brought together experts from around the world to discuss the potential harm and benefit of unmanned aircraft. Ruppert- Transition, Occupy, Prepare for Collapse Michael Ruppert has warned us before. He's warning us again now. In his first book, Crossing the Rubicon (2004), he called out the arrival of Peak Oil and the violent chicanery of global governments (including 9/11 and the Iraq invasion) to grab remaining fuel supplies. Two years later he urged his lecture audiences to get ready for a crash of world financial markets, which took place in 2007. Confronting Collapse - The Crisis of Energy and Money in a Post Peak Oil World (2009) prompted film maker Chris Smith to produce the documentary "Collapse - The Movie" www.collapsemovie.com In this 48-minute interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, Michael Ruppert minces no words: We've begun a fast decline of world oil supplies. This brings declines in goods, transportation, even food supplies. Start growing food, start getting ready. Collapse is at our front door, now. In Ruppert's view, the situation has gone from bad, to worse, to worse than bad. Confronting Collapse presented a 25-Point Program for Action. Today, he shakes his head. "Too late for that now.' That was before the disruption of the Gulf by BP and the destruction of Japan by the Fukushima reactors. The best way to serve others today is to bear witness to the disruptions that are coming and become emotionally, spiritually and physically prepared. In a recent posting on the Collapsenet.com web site, he offers the best words of hope he can muster: "...a new Golden Age is coming. Before a new house -- one that includes a safe place for all life -- can be built, the old one ...must be completely destroyed and defeated. It will achieve the fulfillment of its death wish. It will be satisfied with nothing less. There is no easier, softer way. Embrace the death of the old that you may experience, participate in, and rejoice in the birth of the new." 00:48:00Shift ShapersnoTransition US,Occupy,Peak Oil,Collapse,Michael C RuppertMichael Ruppert has warned us before. In this 26-minute interview with Co-host Daniel Kerbein, Gagnon exposes the U.S. Space Command’s goal of total domination of space – to use it as a base, and deny its use to other nations. Space-based weapons technology drove the Gulf War of the 1990s- the first Space War- where nearly all the Iraqi military was destroyed via satellite. The new tool in the 10-year Afghanistan war is the unmanned killer drone, controlled by a joystick geek at a U.S. air base. In the 70s sci-fi movie “2001”, an ape man throws his club into the air and it fades into a space ship – but futuristic weaponry hasn’t advanced us much beyond the dominating motives of our hairy ancestors. The new orbiting battle array will launch attacks from space platforms. Laser bullets will take out airborne missiles. A Space Plane will swoop down from an orbiting station and bomb countries below, much like a fighter jet. How will this expensive technical arsenal be financed under a deficit-ridden U.S. budget? Gagnon suggests the funding will come from America's social programs like Social Security, so that our nation can be turned to the purpose of global resource extraction. 21st century tools seize the fuel of last century’s technology: oil. A U.S. Space Command doc predicts a rise in organized resistance to global domination of resources. Surveillance and drones will save tons of money when putting down rebellions. Could U.S. citizens, angry over the loss of their safety net, one day be that organized resistance that is to be suppressed? Bruce Gagnon says yes, and the time to act is now – The drones have come home to roost. They are in our skies, right now, courtesy of Homeland Security. The 911 Commission Report is the handbook for what we're supposed to accept about the What happened that day. Instead of "magic bullet" theories that promote Kennedy's lone gunman, the Official 911 story gives us magic buildings and big terrorist mojo. Try and follow this: 3 airliners hit not only the two largest buildings on American soil, but also the most fortified structure in the world - the Pentagon - on exactly the day that Vice Pres. Dick Cheney had stood down our vast air defense forces. While our nation was asleep at coincidentally the right moment, a gang of Muslim extremists with no flight experience used box cutters to hijack the planes,  and fly them into their targets. In violation of chemistry and physics, a jet fuel (kerosene) fire melted steel girders and sent 3 skyscrapers to the ground at free-fall speed, leaving a pile of dust particles, molten metal, and traces of explosives, Paul W. Rea, Ph.D., points out that evidence, testimony, and even known events were removed from the 911 Commission report.  In this 33-minute interview, Dr. Rea, author of Mounting Evidence: Why We Need a New Investigation Into 9/11, tells ShiftShapers host Daniel Kerbein why a new investigation into 9/11 is needed. She also viewed it as a local economy center, even a blueprint for a new community.  A place to innovate, share and figure out the way forward. Today, a visitor can walk into the store front at 5315th St.  in Santa Rosa, and find the colorful Made Local Marketplace; a small business co-working space (where spontaneous creative things happen and work gets done); and classes or workshops on evenings & weekends. Now, with sponsorship from Community Ventures, The Share Exchange has just launched The Local Economy Institute, to promote the establishment of worker-owned cooperatives in the area north of San Francisco. Kelley describes the Institute as the non-profit arm of the Share Exchange working on a bridge to the next economy -- the People's Economy, the Relationship Economy, a Holistic, Fair & Just Economy.  It aims to help communities rebuild strong, vibrant local economies -- particularly small communities or rural geographic regions. In this 41-minute interview, co-host Daniel Kerbein talks to Kelley Rajala about ciioperatives, time banking, urban farming, Transition towns, and the next economy. She knows about it, because she's worked it - earning minimum wage, and less. In this 40-minute interview, ShiftShapers co-host Daniel Kerbein talks to Tracie McMillan, author of The American Way of Eating - Under Cover at WalMart, Applebee’s, Farm Fields and the Dinner Table. Want an inside look at what is happening to our food supply, or what a farm worker has to do to make minimum wage? Tracie McMillan gives us a big picture view of the situation, and backs it up with research done while living inside the belly of the American food chain. This is a nutritionally dense book, complete with a section of detailed notes, a bibliography, and even a budget that Ms. McMillan set for herself to make ends meet while earning minimum and sub-minimum wage. Between the pages, this socially-minded journalist brings us stories of immigrant farm workers and other hard- working, poorly paid people on whom we depend for our food every day. Some listeners may recall that Ms. McMillan and her book became famous when right-wing insult jock Rush Limbaugh berated her on the air and warned listeners that the author is “another single, over-educated woman” out to make us “lose our freedom”. In a scenario that has become emblematic of Rush Limbaugh’s reverse mojo, his victim – and her book -- earned a new level of credibility and interest after the lambasting. A heated schedule of national interviews followed, (including Rachel Maddow, HuffPost, NPR, etc.) Through it all, Ms. McMillan was gracious and found some time for an interview with ShiftShapers. 00:40:00Shift ShapersnoWalMart,American Way of Eating,Tracie McMillan, food security, farm workersFrom the food deserts that are America's cities, to the hot dust devils of Central Valley farms, to the bright shining rows of plastic-shrouded vegetables at WCarolyn Baker-We Need Grief & Heart to Navigate Collapsehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/03/30/carolyn-baker-we-need-grief-heart-to-navigate-collapsePsychologyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/03/30/carolyn-baker-we-need-grief-heart-to-navigate-collapse/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2012/03/30/carolyn-baker-we-need-grief-heart-to-navigate-collapseFri, 30 Mar 2012 19:00:00 GMTCarolyn Baker-We Need Grief & Heart to Navigate Collapse For several years now, Carolyn Baker has offered emotional and spiritual tools for preparing for living in a post-industrial world. Her 17 years of private practice as a therapist, and her experience as a professor of history and psychology, come through on her website, Speaking Truth to Power at www.carolynbaker.net. Carolyn’s book Sacred Demise: Walking The Spiritual Path of Industrial Civilization’s Collapse employs her experience from her practice of “Collapse Coaching”, working with real people who have gone beyond concern and become aware deep in their guts, that collapse isn’t just a concept. It’s a living reality taking shape all around us and is about to take over our future. Navigating The Coming Chaos: A Handbook For Inner Transition speaks to the life and guidance to be found in our hearts and our souls, as we shift out of the world of the predictable into the unpredictable. This is Carolyn’s latest book. It brings in the spirit of her drumming and storytelling, goes to the places of the primitive and sometimes the dark, that we need to be in touch with as we move into the future. Looking for a group to work with, she became attracted to the Transition Town movement. Transition puts in place local food production, energy and goods, cutting down on fueled transport. When communities see the writing on the wall, they get busy. In this 32-minute interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, Trish describes the transition group she helped found in Richmond, just north of San Francisco. In the spirit of local icon Rosie the Riveter, they took the name The Richmond Rivets. They rolled up their sleeves and launched a seed lending library (at the public library), a fruit tree giveaway, and other ongoing programs. Richmond’s supportive city government has turned over an open greenway as a pubic farm, worked by Urban Tilth, an urban farming and youth education group. The Greenway now provides access to healthy food, and city folk are getting new skills as farmers. Richmond is also holding compost giveaways, and harvest swap meets for local gardeners. Members of the Richmond City Council visited Mondragon, a world-wide hub of successful cooperatives, and now work with the Richmond Rivets and other groups to incubate worker-owned businesses. To prepare their community for future sudden events, the Rivets have launched “Two Steps a Month”, an emergency supply program which shows how to put away essential emergency supplies a little at a time, making preparedness possible on a low budget. A positive by-product of the Transition effort, Trish points out, is that communities work together. Groups in Richmond have launched water conservation projects, and a time bank where everyone trades hours of service with others. Our current world empire, and possibly even our civilization, is likely to fall with it. Examples of social collapse in recent years show that women and members of socially rejected groups such as immigrants, often fall victim to resulting rage and conflicts. Now is the time, says Derrick, to pledge allegiance to women, and to make sure that "outsiders" are given an equal place in the new community. In this 45-minute interview, ShiftShapers co-host Daniel Kerbein talks with Derrick Jensen, author of 12 books on environment and consciousness, including A Language Older Than Words, End Game, and his most recent work, Dreams, which was published in the fall of 2011. He is also a teacher and holds degrees in creative writing and mineral engineering. As an activist, he has spoken at several Occupy demonstrations across the U.S. Derrick has made a study of the ways in which the earth around us attempts to communicate with us, and the ways in which we could be listening. Animals, forests, trees, and even our bodies give us messages every day if we would only listen to something other than our spoken languages. Part of the problem, he says, is that most of the time we simply aren't interested. Trees in a forest are nothing more than dollar signs, to be silenced, exploited and clearcut. Derrick urges us to see the connection between this silencing of the natural world, and what is being done to millions of people forced into slavery, prostitution and sweat shops world wide. In order to coerce we must first silence. And now, the true fruits of centuries of coercion are about to be borne - it is about to destroy us. To survive, we need to start listening again. Alia is a member of the forensics (Speech and Debate) team at Analy High School. This interview, about the preparation that speech training gives people for their lives, takes place during the 2nd half of this 1-hr program. The first portion of the show is devoted to world leaders, real and imagined, who had to find their voice and inspire their people during times of adversity. Daniel plays back speeches byBritish Prime Minister Winston Churchill and King George VI, rallying the people to stand tall and be prepared for victory in spite of daily bombing attacks from fascist Nazi Germany.   Both of these speakers had to overcome personal adversity to deliver their speeches: They both had speech impediments, and King George in particular had a paralyzing fear of speaking in front of anyone. Both of these world leaders underwent intensive training and practice to overcome these obstacles and stand tall before their people. Then there are the imagined world leaders. In this segment Daniel plays back a stirring speech by Charlie Chaplin in one of his only speaking roles in the cinema, "The Great Dictator", a satire of fascist Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. In the film Chaplin plays a stand-in for the dictator, but in the end when asked to give a speech, gives one from the heart, stirring the people to throw off their chains and act together. The Petaluma City Council voted in December to seek legal protection for homeowners faced with foreclosures and evictions. They wrote a letter to CA Attorney General asking that the AG work to 1) temporarily stay auction proceedings and 2) temporarily suspend CA Codes requiring County sheriffs to serve all process and notices related to foreclosures and evictions, noting that banks & other financial institutions have a track record of engaging in "…unfair and deceptive practices in violation of California law.” In addition, the council is seeking damages for the city’s loss of more than $1 million in property tax revenue. "If we don't stop values from constant decline, more loans will go upside-down, more sellers will have to sell short, more buyers will stop buying, and eventually Banks will probably stop lending", asserts CJ Holmes in her blog. "The far-reaching stress on Owners, Governments, and even Banks, will be far greater than the issues we face right now." Scott Yundt is staff attorney for Tri-Valley CARES (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment). In this 35-minute interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, he explains how, even ibeing a Superfund toxic site, does not guarantee the government will give you the information you need to conduct a proper cleanup. After having won a Freedom of Information Act suit and a court order, the group still receives redacted information, where portions of documents are blacked out. Scott and Tri-Valley CARES have prevailed with the help of former lab employees, whose interest is in finding out what elements they have been exposed to and obtaining proper treatment for their radiation ailments. Even in the face of this poisonous legacy, and with the residents and families of Livermore neighboring its little secret compound, the Lawrence Livermore National Lab is still not finished toying with catastrophe. There is also a section devoted to biological weapons there. Germs for anthrax, bird flu, and even the plague live in jars, inside a cluster of portables, apparently waiting to be released among some hapless population. There, biological agents are aerosolized and tested on animals, to assure that they can spread and cause death among humans. We're contaminating and poisoning our own citizens as we contemplate bombing and bringing weaponized pestilence upon people in other countries. In this 50-minute interview with co-host Daniel Kerbein, Kunstler says it's too late to hope that alternative energy sources will keep supporting our wasteful consumption and commuting practices. He even doubts that governments will have the capital any time soon to build the new infrastructure that a massive shift to alternative energy would require. Instead, he says, it is time to retool our lives and communities to live locally. Jobs and shopping within walking distance. Food raised within a few miles of our plates. The absolute and total end of suburbia (which Kunstler believes will be inevitable with escalating fuel prices.) The Occupy Wall Street Journal, which has distributed over 100,000 copies between its English and Spanish-language editions, informs and updates protest participants, as well as would-be participants. Michael first encountered mass anti-corporate revolt when covering, as a journalist, the "Water Wars" in Bolivia in the 1990's. Bechtel Corporation had privatized all the water in the countrry and was denying water access to anyone who couldn't pay the huge new fees. Bechtel lobbied tne Bolivian government to decree that people coult not gather water from any creeks in the country's watersheds, or even capture rain water from the sky, without paying Bechtel. After weeks of riots and revolt and some loss of life, the Bolivian people wrested their water rights from Bechtel. For Michael Levitin, this was a dramatic example of what a popular uprising can accomplish, and he sees that spirit in the Occupy movement. Given the opportunity to become an editor of the new Occupy newspaper - The Occupied Wall Street Journal - he was up to the task. Shift Shapers co-host Daniel Kerbein conducted this 35-minute interview live over KBBF-FM 89.1 (Calistoga, CA), a pioneering bilingual public radio station. Author, educator and peak oil authority Richard Heinberg has a prediction for us, in the title of his latest book: The End of Grwoth. He visited "Shift Shapers" on KBBF-FM 89.1. Heinberg is a Senior Fellow at Post Carbon Institute. In this 55-minute interview, he says global oil production peaked about 6 years abo, and is now declining as demand escalates. Growth requires resources, so it is no coincidence that the world's banks and governments have plunged into financial collapse. Since the U.S. hit peak oil production in 1970, its growth has been propped up by computer innovations, the use of 3rd world labor to replace U.S. workers, and recently by a toxic soup of financial schemes pumped out by Wall Street. Those new schemes caused a series of bubble-&-bust cycles, each trading on debt. The latest one had investors betting that U.S. real estate values would grow forever, so fast that even bad loans would soon be made good by the property backing them. The bubble burst, leaving a global economy poisoned by trillions in bad mortgages, and declining resources for generating a recovery. So, don't expect that new smart grid or solar & wind farms to curb our use of fossil fuels. Expect paralysis as the fuel supply winds down and prices soar. What do we do when we can't count on government and global corporations to provide what we need? Be the kind of community that provides its own needs, suggests Heinberg. Local currencies are promoting local trade. "Transition" groups are growing food on former lawns. Wise city councils are  making sure water and other essentials will be provided as oil declines. Widespread shock turns to community preparedness and people helping each other. We become Shift Shapers! 00:54:00Shift ShapersnoRichard Heinberg, peak oil, transition, post carbon, fossil fuelsWhat happens when the very thing that has fueled the global economy for more than 100 years - fuel itself - gets past its peak and begins a sure, steady declinClass Warfare: The Resistance Reporthttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2011/11/29/annabel-ascher--class-warfare-the-resistance-reportPolitics Progressivehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2011/11/29/annabel-ascher--class-warfare-the-resistance-report/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2011/11/29/annabel-ascher--class-warfare-the-resistance-reportTue, 29 Nov 2011 23:00:00 GMTClass Warfare: The Resistance Report Annabel Ascher is tired of hearing the term "Class Warfare" used by the elites and the elite media to describe any kind of movement or legislation that would restore to the working people that which has been taken from us. In this 30-minute discussion with Shift Shapers co-host Daniel Kerbein, she turns this meme on its head. When you look at history, you see that warfare has been waged by the elites against the general population for more than 200 years. It has been played out through a steady process of taking away public property and resources (the commons) from the common people, and handing it over to corporations, developers, and other private hands. We are in a state now where this seizure of the commons has taken away our public lands, airwaves, resources and water supplies, retitled our public landmarks with corporate names, turned the incarceration of offenders over to private prison firms. Corporations even own - through a bizarre set of patent laws - plant species, including important food crops such as rice, corn and beans. They even own parts of our very bodies! Yes, it's true. Got cancer? Want some university to research the cause & cure? No such luck. A corporation owns thoseinfected genes, and no research will be done until Hell freezes over, or Satan lets go of the patent. Annabel Ascher points out that movements of old, such as the union strikes of the early 20th century, and new ones springing up in 2011 such as the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street, are the opposite of class warfare. These movements, and any other ways that we raise our voices, are the resistance to the class warfare being waged on us by the elites. Annabel Ascher is the newest member of the Shift Shapers team, appearing with us weekly on KBBF-FM 89.1 Calistoga, and of course on this podcast. Many of North Atlantic's and Evolver's books are written from a futurist's standpoint, with perspectives about 2012 and climate change. There is no real backup system to replace melting snowpacks, glaciers, ice caps. When they're gone they're gone, and at the current rate they soon will be gone. "The Transition Movement is showing people to look closer to home", says Reil, "for solutions to their food & water supply, power generation, and mutual support. It brings a view of happiness that is about the assurance that we all have what we need, and a sense of community. Which I think is more appropriate than the consumer-based view of happiness which is looking for it in the next product. He also foresees the world reaching a tipping point soon - with sudden violent climate events, with water supplies and agriculture, and with further deterioration in the economy (which has depended on endless growth and is teetering on collapse). Climate events this year have destroyed crops and infrastructure, showing how much local economies depend on a predictable climate. For those who understand the challenges in front of us, that is not an unwelcome thing as long as we're prepared. For example the city of Willits California made a study of how much acreage would be required to produce the equivalent food volume of a supermarket, then obtained that acreage and is growing food on it. Sound communication in that situation ensures survival. Non-threatening, non-violent communication will become the order of the day as resources become unpredictable and we're under stress. It also has something to offer us as a practice in our current, more predictable lives. Cate Griffiths, Director of Recourse Mediation Services in Santa Rosa California, shares with us in this 43-minute interview some of the speaking and listening skills people have employed to find agreement in stressful and even antagonistic situations. Many of the practices she brings to us come from Non-Violent Communication, a practice that is taught around the world and endorsed by mediators and therapists. Even though our abilities have become clouded by isolation in our technical, shopping-oriented culture,  we still have to occasionally stick our heads out of our cubicles and networking pages long enough to converse, ask for what we need, and maybe even express love & gratitude. Once our worlds of energy and food supply have become unpredictable, we will more and more have to cooperate and rely on our neighbors and communities for shared information about how to obtain or produce what we need. (Even the best-appointed bunker will, in time, run out of supplies.) Real communication, in other words, will once again become a needed survival skill, as it was for peoples of old.  Add to that the stress produced by extreme climate events, by crumbling governmental infrastructure, and it becomes critical that we listen to each other, rather than pose a challenge or a threat. 00:43:00Shift Shapersnotransition, collapse, communication,NVC,mediationA song from the 90's contains the words, "Put down that gun and let's talk." To have a community where, as soon as the power grid or food supply goes down, people are ready to get going and help sustain each other. Where do you start? In this 31-minute interview, Claudia de la Pena Ms. de la Pena lays out the logic of community participation vs. alienation. Ms. de la Pena, a member of Transition Sonoma Valley, describes the breakthrough they had. Her group discovered that since we will need to pool all our talents, the most valuable first step is to make sure the people in the community get to know each other. This means the people on both sides of "the tracks" - the middle class, the working poor, the well-off, and even the homeless. One of the first exercises is to see where people in the community could be supplying each others' needs -  for food, in particular - right now. Transition Sonoma Valley discovered that a viable first step is to obtain plentiful supplies of free organic nourishing food, through the practice of gleaning. Gleaning used to be regarded as a practice undertaken by the poor, gathering leftovers after the harvest has already taken place. The tradition of gleaning is based on an unspoken right to those unwanted leftovers. See the illustration, The Gleaners (Les Glaneuses), by Francois Millet, 1857. Once a sign of shame, of necessity borne of poverty, gleaning now becomes a joyful way for the new community members to provide for each other. We posted our first program about the B-Note on June 10, on KBBF-FM. We promised an update with Mr. Dicken. Here it is, with additional depth and even some advice for Shift-Shapers on how to start an alternative (or "complementary") currency as the new tender for trade in your transitional community. Beyond the immediate boost to local economies, currencies like the B-Note could also add protection to those communities as the Euro and the U.S. Dollar navigate through the treacherous waters of global trade, becoming more unstable every day.  This informative interview moves us further along in exploring how people in transitional communities can trade with each other and with other communities. It also gives us examples and resources for getting a local currency started and moving forward- eventually even becoming an entire financial system. At Shift Shapers we look at all the necessary  elements of a successful transition from the current global & national environmental-economic collapse. We consider the establishment of local currencies an essential matter, as urgent as the installation of local power generation and local food production. Jeff's advice? JUST DO IT, don't wait! His brief asssessment of our current condition and future? We are facing a kind of wall here. A financial, resource and environmental wall. Here's what we have to expect: unemployment, homelessness, bank failures, hunger, political instability and international conflict." World economic growth is over. In our debt-based economic system, tomorrow's growth has been relied upon as collateral for today's debt. Now, declining oil production and price spikes at $100 a barrel, have put the brakes on continued growth. Add to that the economic consequences of extreme catastrophic weather events, and the worldwide looming impact of more than $50 trillion in bad mortgage securities, and you see what we have: a global economy in disarray, its future halted. We've gone so far out on a limb, we will have a difficult period of adaptation," says Heinberg. "We have some hard times ahead." Our hope? Local currencies and economics that are in tune with the reality that the economy is subject to the environment, not the other way around. Renewable resources have to be replenished, and production waste needs to be "food" for other processes in the cycle. A resilient society means producing locally what we need. He credits the Transition movement with moving communities into a future without fossil fuel dependency and debt-driven currency. "We are facing the greatest opportunity not only of our lifetime, but of any human lifetime," Heinberg assures us. Joseph Tuck is General Coordinator and CEO of Alvarado St. Bakery, a worker-owned cooperative in Petaluma, CA, about 40 miles north of San Francisco. Joseph has found that the worker coop model "fosters trust in your co-workers, and trust in our organization." The worker coop model also provides living wages, by distributing its net income among the member employees. This allows everyone in the company, from maintenance crew to executives, to enjoy a living wage and even plan for college for their children. The dollars that usually get syphoned off to CEO pay and shareholder dividends get distributed to the people who are working together to produce and sell the product. It also fosters innovation in bringing to market an excellent and healthful product. Alvarado St. Bakery was the first to market breads made from sprouted organic grains, and still holds that market niche. Bread lovers enjoy the product, which has brought forward a history of steady growth for the company, numerous awards and other recognition. A recent one is the Pioneer Award from Greenjobs.org. And of course, Alvarado St. Bakery was featured in the Michael Moore film "Capitalism, a Love Story". "We were green before people knew what the word 'green' meant," says Joseph, recounting the company's beginnings in 1973 as an initiative of the Red Clover Workers Brigade, dedicated to the dictum of food for people, not for profit. Roosevelt, one that speaks to us today, was delivered in 1938. Ah, yes -- It was a year of swing -- music that grew out of, and expressed, the new surge of public energy, the spirit of public service and the renewed economy that was well underway as a result of Roosevelt's job stimulus and relief initiatives. Were FDR’s daring programs all about green jobs? Well, not really but there is a parallel: In 1937, four years after President Roosevelt's original relief and stimulus package started bringing us out of the Great Depression, a steady curve of progress started to nosedive. Roosevelt, under pressure from deficit hawks, had cut back on job creating stimulus programs. Results were swift. Unemployment and layoffs -- the ugly face of double-dip depression-- returned to haunt everyday Americans. In a clip from 1938, Roosevelt declares a return to the New Deal job creation that drove away the Depression in the first place. And while we hear this Fireside Chat, just think: Green jobs. Green jobs... The manufacturing sector had overproduced in anticipation of growing employment – growth that was curtailed in 1937 when Roosevelt pulled back on job stimulus funding in favor of what today is called “fiscal conservatism”. Roosevelt is accused by the right today of having been a socialist, of moving United States politics and economics to the far left. Actually, given the national mood and world politics at the time, FDR’s approach was very centrist. In Germany & Italy, people had fallen into line with fascist dictators who had promised to bring economic stimulus through military control of their nations. Some years earlier, Russia had a complete Communist revolution and the worldwide Communist Party movement was held at bay in the U.S. because of aggressive jobs programs and poverty relief.00:30:00Shift Shapersnogreen jobs, job stimulus, fiscal conservatism,FDR,economic recoveryOne of the most important speeches by President Frankllin D. Instead of attracting businesses and jobs, those neighborhoods became host to boarded up buildings and toxic waste dumps. In this vacuum, absent of capital, Omar pursued a vision to bring new jobs and businesses to his community. He found one that could be started using a plentiful local resource: waste. He and other like-minded entrepreneurs set up a cooperative store that sells recycled construction materials, a venture that has become another successful example of a worker-owned coop. Out of this has grown Green Worker Cooperatives, a "boot camp" committed to green job creation and incubating new cooperative business ventures in the South Bronx. In this installment of Green Livelihood/Viviendo Verde Ya!, Co-hosts Evelina Molina and Dan Kerbein interview Omar Freilla of New York's Green Worker Cooperatives, about the growing business model of worker-owned coops. Local economies, built around cooperatives, present an alternative -- maybe even an antidote - to the roller coaster scenario of recovery/bubble/crash presented by the global economy. Today on Green Livelihood/Viviendo Verde Ya, co-hosts Dan Kerbein and Evelina Molina talk to activists who are building the new economy in their communities. First we introduce the concepts of the new green livelihood economy for our listeners, then jump right into an interview with Chris Oseguera, a director of the Eco-Workforce Collective at the North Bay Institute for Green Technologies, in Santa Rosa California. 00:30:00Shift Shapersnocooperatives, green jobs, green economy, sustainable business, permacultureWe hear a lot these days about global competition for markets, manufacturing andjjobs, and the current "race to the bottom" for wages, or "bottoming out" of theKelley Rajala, Share Exchange Launch "Made Local Marketplace"http://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2010/12/16/kelley-rajala-share-exchange-launch-made-local-marEnvironmenthttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2010/12/16/kelley-rajala-share-exchange-launch-made-local-mar/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftshapers/2010/12/16/kelley-rajala-share-exchange-launch-made-local-marThu, 16 Dec 2010 03:00:00 GMTKelley Rajala, Share Exchange Launch "Made Local Marketplace" Watch a video about the Share Exchange http://www.youtube.com/user/mayarenegade#p/u It's a locally made marketplace, complete with a small business incubator and a "work-with lounge" where new entrepreneurs obtain resources and assistance with starting their ventures. It's the Made Local Marketplace, at the Share Exchange Coop in downtown Santa Rosa, California and was inspired by Kelley Rajala, whose vision is to transition from dependence on big-box foreign producers and factory farms, to a vibrant and self-sustaining local economy. Kelley's energy, creativity and practical sense of business is engaging, and it is a delight to interview her on the premier bpodcast of Green Livelihood/Viviendo Verde Ya.
