America has the highest rate of incarceration in the world. With 5 % of world population, it has 25% of the world's prisoners. This points to fundamental problems with the criminal justice system in the US.

With over 70 million Americans incarcerated, on probation or on parole, there is a serious problem with the way crime is defined and dealt with in the United States. The problem has become so bad that conservatives and liberals are joining forces to work together to find ways to reform the system.

No one can talk with more authority about injustices in the prison system than our guest on Taking Back America on December 9. Mary Ellen Digiacomo is with 4JusticeNow, the Florida chapter of The Action Committee for Women in Prison. She works with women who are often in prison as a result of the actions of their partners or because of defending themselves against abuse.

Mary Ellen can also speak from personal experience, having been convicted of violations of arcane regulations on selling shares in a company that was detroyed by state regulators in what appears to have been a witch hunt. After 5 years in prison, she is trying to rebuild her life while helping other women defend themselves against the abuses that she saw and experienced in prison.

This show was broadcast on December 22 on Star Com Radio network.
