It’s more than that, it’s about creating community, a family. Occasionally, people ask me, which is the best episode to listen to? But like family, to me, they are all like my babies, I love them all.  Sure, there may be a topic that is best suited for an individual to listen to at any given time due to their unique circumstances, but overall, if you listen to every episode, you begin to feel the familiarity. You begin to feel the family.  And so this week I've brought back a guest who has shared her journey with us through a few episodes. She’s become a dear friend to me, Rene Brooks. I asked her to come and give us an update on how she is doing and what she's up to now. After all, isn't an expert someone who knows virtually everything there is to know on a subject? How he came to know just SO much about ADHD is his journey and I'm thrilled he took some time to sit with me and my co-host, Agnes Green, to share so much from epigenics to cognitive dissonance to stories of the experts with whom he's worked. Rick was recently honored as an inductee of the Order of Ontario. What that means is that his dedication to spreading ADHD awareness has not been in vain. In fact, his body of work has saved countless relationships and probably many lives. How's that for a non-expert? I was prescribed Adderall and I hated taking it, I never ate, my mouth would always be dry, I couldn't sleep and It made it hard to make friends because I was so quite all the time (usually I would be talking up a storm and getting in trouble) I would trick the nurse at school and pretend to take it because I didn't like it that much. The positive side to that was I would go from straight F's to straight A's in a matter of weeks, I would clean my house, be good, I never procrastinated, I was nicer. It worked miracles. Unfortunately, you can even try to have fun and accidentally go too far the other way, destroying all of the systems you've worked so hard to create. Where's the balance? Mind you, I don't believe we actually answered that question but we did have fun talking about it. It's a type of Binocular Vision Disorder called Vertical Heterophoria, and is unfortunately showing up in the ADHD population as well as other populations. Perhaps the link has to do with the  deregulation of another of our body's systems? Symptoms include dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, imbalance, neck aches, eye pain...the list goes on and many eye doctors don't even know about it. Figuring out how to more effectively communicate with your spouse, when one has ADHD and the other doesn't, requires patience and time. One example among her many engaging stories helps us see how even after being repeatedly told what to do to keep track of her keys, it wasn't until she felt a resonnance with others in the ADHD community that she was able to finally devise her own unique system ... one that, ironically, wasn't much different than that original spouse-suggested one.
