To Whom are you thankful? Today's segment will focus on the reasons we are thankful, and to Whom we express our thanks. We will look at the history of Thanksgiving in America (the New World) to uncover the roots of this holiday. We will compare the Thanksgiving of history with the Thanksgiving of today. We'll see that modern Thanksgiving has run "afowl" of its predecessor's tradition ... in more ways than one. For background, we will refer to the history of Thanksgiving as outlined by the History Channel: http://www.history.com/topics/thanksgiving For an editorial opinion, we will also refer to this blog from Charmaine T. In fact, all of creation was teeming with life. He never took back His command and His desire for life to flourish on the Earth. Why do we resist? Why do we constantly seek to choke out the life that He has instilled in Creation? On today's show, we will wrestle with this question as we come to terms with the number of lives that have been snuffed out over the last 40 years. We will read about the blessing of life and the curse of death. We will learn how we should truly repent of the evils of abortion, which we cloak in softer terms such as "choice" and "womens' reproductive rights." Passages we will read today include: Genesis 1:1-2:3 Psalms 127:3-128:6 II Corinthians 6:14-7:1 II Corinthians 7:9-10 For further reading, you will find a refreshing perspective on the question of "to have or not to have kids" here: http://charmainetdavis.blogspot.com/2012/09/how-many-children-should-i-have.html, for a refreshing perspective on the question of life. What are you suffering from today? What are your fears or doubts? What challenges or obstacles are filling you with trepidation and dread? We all have those. I have mine; you have yours. Despite what the humanistic world tells us, our strength is not in ourselves, but in the Lord. So I want to encourage you today with His word. To do so, I will read from the Bible, I Peter chapters 4 & 5, as well as II Corinthians 4 & 5. I will also pray for those who are suffering and need encouragement. Ironically, it is more dangerous to be a Christian today than ever before -- and you don't even have to be a missionary. In the past century alone, more Christians were murdered for their faith than in any other century in human history, an estimated 200 million. Full-blown persecution, including rape, murder and oppression, continues today in countries around the world -- but you won't hear much about it in the mainstream media, which is either afraid of what it might find or not disturbed enough to care. In this week's show, we'll continue our discussion from last week's show concerning persecution of Christians around the world. We'll focus on Christians who risk their lives every day, simply due to their faith, focusing on the countries of Egypt, Afghanistan and Iraq. The number planning to participate has risen from 33% of consumers in 2009 to 40% in 2010. All told, Halloween sales are expected to reach nearly $6 billion -- a staggering amount, but still paltry compared to the $460 billion Christmas takes in. As growing sales indicate, Halloween has taken on greater prominence in the American culture. Retail stores dedicate entire aisles to the holiday, some erecting displays as early as June or July. We also see people decorating earlier in the year, with yards and porches donning everything from straw bails to jack-o-lanterns a month or more ahead of time. The growth in Halloween's popularity poses a challenge for the Christian: what do you do with this supposed "holiday?" Is Halloween a holiday, or "holy day," or is it a "hands-off" day? As John Macarthur, a well-known Christian preacher, writes, “Many Christians refuse to participate in Halloween. Some are wary of its pagan origins; others of its dark, ghoulish imagery; still others are concerned for the safety of their children. But other Christians choose to partake of the festivities, whether participating in school activities, neighborhood trick-or-treating, or a Halloween alternative at their church. “The question is, how should Christians respond to Halloween? Is it irresponsible for parents to let their children trick-or-treat? What about Christians who refuse any kind of celebration during the season--are they overreacting?” (http://www.gty.org/Resources/Articles/A123_Christians-and-Halloween) And finally, what does the Bible say, if anything, about how the Christian should approach this spooky pastime? We'll explore these issues, and more, in this Saltshaker episode.01:00:00saltshakernohalloween,christianity,church,all saints day,BibleThis year, an estimated 148 million people will celebrate Halloween in the US, each of them spending an average of $66 on candy, costumes and decorations, accor
