Jesus and the Adulterous Woman. John 8:1-11. God is not a God of reward and punishment or good vs evil.
1. God's New Testament economy is not according to Moses' law. God does not relate to humanity through any religious system of rule-keeping, reward and punishment, blessing or cursing, right vs wrong. All these are facets of the legal system derived from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The tree of knowledge is a tree of law. See 2 Cor 11:3. God sent His Son into the world to redeem humanity from the curse sourced in the tree of law (Gal 3:10-13) and set us free from it. Rom 8:1-2; Gal 5:1. The law cannot give its adherents life. Rom 7:10; Gal 3:21. The law kills. The Spirit gives life. 2 Cor 3:6; 1 Cor 15:45.
2. Jesus brought the Life of God into the world for the purpose of restoring humanity to God, the tree of life. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. John 1:4. I am come that they might have life. John 10:10.
3. The Pharisees brought this woman caught in adultery to Jesus and asked Him whether He would follow Moses' law (Lev 20:10; Deut 22:22) and agree that the woman should be stoned to death.
4. Jesus would not agree to follow Moses' law which He referred to as "your (the Jews') law." Jn 8:17. He would not even identify His Father or Himself with Moses' law.
