SUSIE SINGER CARTER & LIZ TORRES OF "MY MOM & THE GIRL" STARRING VALERIE HARPER

While she's made few public appearances since being diagnosed with cancer in 2013, Valerie Harper is returning to the silver screen in a big way. In My Mom and the Girl, Harper plays Nanny, a singer suffering from Alzheimer's. Nanny's illness turns into a gift when she encounters an unruly girl while roaming the streets of East L.A., and her fearlessness takes her on an enlightening adventure.  "I liked the way it was written," Harper told Entertainment Tonight. Emmy winner Liz Torres plays her watchful caregiver, Irlanda who stays on her heels like a guardian angel.

THE WHY: A few years ago my 82-yr-old mother and love of my life, Norma Holzer, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, as for so many families in America, ours was thrown into a nightmare of fear, guilt, obligation and confusion. I discovered that most people are afraid to face, let alone embrace, a situation as abhorrent as Alzheimer's, & as a result, I was my mom's designated - make that only - caregiver.  Awful, right?  Well, not exactly...  Even though my mother’s decline has been devastating, by embracing it, I have received countless unexpected gifts of insight, understanding & joy filled with humor, music & a whole lot of love. This led me to think, "I DO need to film this story!" And so I am!"
